Position SummaryWe are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Mortgage Underwriter to join our team. The ideal candidate will have deep knowledge of residential mortgage products, underwriting standards, and investor guidelines, and will be responsible for assessing creditworthiness, evaluating risk, and ensuring compliance with all regulatory requirements. This individual must be analytical, detail-oriented, and committed to delivering high-quality, accurate decisions within established time frames.
Responsibilities- Loan Review & Analysis: Analyze mortgage loan applications including borrower credit reports, income documentation (W-2s, tax returns, pay stubs, etc.), asset statements, property appraisals, title reports, and purchase agreements.
- Income Calculation & Eligibility: Review and calculate income for salaried, self-employed, and commission-based borrowers using FNMA/FHLMC and FHA guidelines.

Risk Management:
Ensure all loan files meet company, agency (Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac), and investor guidelines, as well as federal and state compliance regulations (TRID, RESPA, ECOA, etc.). - Risk Flags & Problem Resolution: Identify and flag potential red flags or areas of concern, such as fraud risk, layering of risk, or misrepresentation.
- Regulatory Knowledge & Standards: Maintain up-to-date knowledge of changing regulatory and investor requirements, and adjust underwriting standards accordingly.
- Decision-Making & Communication: Render loan decisions with appropriate conditions and communicate clearly with Loan Officers, Processors, and Management.
- Collaboration & Issue Resolution: Work collaboratively to gather missing documentation and resolve complex loan issues.
- Loan Actions & Documentation: Issue Loan Approval, Suspension, or Denial in a clear and timely manner.
- Coaching & Feedback: Provide coaching or feedback when documents are insufficient or do not meet standard guidelines.
- Pipeline & Workflow Management: Manage a consistent and timely flow of files through the pipeline while meeting internal service-level agreements (SLAs).
- Productivity & Prioritization: Prioritize tasks and deadlines in a high-volume, deadline-driven environment without sacrificing accuracy.

Collaboration:
Participate in daily/weekly team pipeline meetings as needed.
- Minimum 5 years of recent residential mortgage underwriting experience.
- In-depth knowledge of conventional (FNMA/FHLMC), FHA, VA underwriting guidelines.
- Active DE (Direct Endorsement) and/or SAR (Staff Appraisal Reviewer) certification preferred.
- Experience working with Automated Underwriting Systems such as Desktop Underwriter (DU) and Loan Product Advisor (LPA/LP).
- Proficiency with Encompass or similar loan origination systems.
- Strong understanding of income calculations, especially for self-employed borrowers.
- Familiarity with secondary market requirements and investor overlays.
- Detail-oriented with strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Proven ability to work independently, manage time effectively, and multitask under pressure.
