Responsibilities- Discuss plan of care with the assigned team each morning (including anesthesiologist) to identify and correct problems; assist in the preparation of the patient pre-, intra-, and postoperative phases as schedule permits.
- Demonstrate competence to scrub on all types of surgical procedures; perform tasks requiring technical and manual skills under the direction of the circulating RN.
- Assist in setting up the room for procedure at least 15 minutes prior to scheduled time, check all equipment/instruments prior to each procedure to ensure proper functioning, and assemble needed supplies using preference cards.
- Assist with all endoscopy procedures (EGD, colonoscopy, endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG), bronchoscopy, and TEE).
- Assistance with electroconvulsive therapy procedures and special projects as assigned.
- Order and maintain anesthesia supplies (including carts) working closely with the Director of Anesthesia or designee to identify other anesthesia needs.
- Compile and process O.R. records into logbook; process sterilization records and anesthesia log as appropriate.
- Order O.R. materials from Central Supply and Storeroom regularly; keep assigned Procedure Rooms and carts stocked with supplies; check expiration dates of OR supplies/packages and instrumentation.
- Follow written procedures for sterilization (steam sterilization and Steris machines); understand responsibilities for chemical and biological monitoring.
- Participate in meetings, continuing education, in-service programs, and educational workshops as required (mandatory and yearly hospital and departmental educational plans).
- Attend monthly unit meetings.
- Apply customer‑service standards: respect, flexibility, knowledge, confidence, professionalism, pleasant attitude, patience, and helpfulness; respond in a timely, professional, caring, and respectful manner as per Customer Service Performance expectations.
- Maintain established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance program, safety, environmental, and infection‑control standards. Assess gaps in policies and create necessary policies and procedures to fulfill these gaps.
- Understand and adhere to the Medical Center’s Code of Conduct, Mission, Vision, and Values statements.
- Perform other related duties as required.
- Education: High school graduate or equivalent; completion of a formal Surgical Technician program required.
- Certification: Certified surgical technologist credential administered by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting or its successor, or other nationally recognized credentialing organization required.
- Additional Certification: American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) required.
- Experience: At least one year preferred.
- Skills: Good interpersonal skills; speaks, reads, and writes English to the extent required by the position.
- Job Setting / Physical Demands: O.R.; frequent contact with patients, surgeons, and other staff; use correct body mechanics while standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, and carrying medium to heavy equipment with close visual attention and intense concentration; exposure to humidity variations, odors, fumes, blood, excreta, and confined quarters.
Salary: $32.34 to $42.39 per hour, plus differential pay ($2.65 per hour for evening, night, weekend). Salary commensurate with experience within posted range.
