Position Summary
As part of a Team Based Care Model, this APP will provide hospital coverage to support the surgical team by delivering prompt consultation and crisis management for the general surgery population.
Primary Clinical Duties and Responsibilities- Assist in prompt consultations from the emergency department and hospital units.
- Act as first assist in the operating room, including minimally invasive robotic surgery and general cases.
- Perform history and physical examinations and clinical evaluations, including pre‑operative and post‑operative care.
- Conduct hospital rounding, follow‑up care, and discharge planning for surgical patients.
- Order and interpret laboratory and diagnostic imaging studies.
- Order, monitor, and administer medications, including controlled dangerous substances.
- Perform timely follow‑up care.
- Document clinical findings, impressions, and treatment plans promptly and accurately.
- Serve on call, weekend rotation, and flexible work hours as required.
- Demonstrate service excellence and uphold professional courtesy, cooperation, and respect.
- Maintain patient confidentiality at all times.
- Utilize appropriate and effective patient care plans and complete documentation concurrently with patient encounters.
- Ensure continuity of care through adequate scheduling, tracking of return visits, completion of treatment plans, and follow‑up of chronic problems, abnormal tests, and missed appointments.
- Provide periodic health screening and preventive care, including physical exams and cardiac risk appraisals, and deliver patient education with clear explanations of treatments, medication use and side effects, health maintenance, and written handouts.
- Delegate clinical tasks appropriately to staff based on their level of training.
- Provide accurate billing and reimbursement documentation, including specific diagnosis codes.
- Adhere to infection control and safety protocols.
- Familiarize oneself with on‑site diagnostic procedures and equipment.
- Pursue continuing education and share knowledge with the health care team; participate in professional organizations and review relevant literature.
- Participate in on‑call schedules and respond to emergency calls from staff or physicians.
- Identify opportunities to improve processes and systems for cost savings and enhanced satisfaction.
- Complete managed care applications, credentialing, and re‑credentialing requests promptly.
- Comply with managed care and insurer guidelines, including Medicare.
- Support corporate and office‑specific business development and strategic planning efforts.
- Collaborate, train, and/or supervise Advanced Practice Clinicians as needed.
- Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant program, as determined by the Committee on Allied Health.
- Or a registered professional nurse who has graduated from an accredited Nurse Practitioner program (master’s in nursing).
- Hold a valid, current New Jersey medical license.
- Obtain a New Jersey CDS and federal DEA certificate upon employment if not already held.
- Maintain hospital admitting privileges and all required credentials.
- Current certification from the National Commission on the Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA).
- For Advanced Practice Nurses, current board certification from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) or the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) in a specialty area.
- Registered Nurse First Assist (RNFA) certification, if applicable.
- NIFA certification to first assist in the operating room for APNs with a minimum of one year of clinical OR experience, primarily in the relevant specialty.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certifications.
- Evidence of excellent interpersonal skills, effective communication, and creative problem‑solving.
- Active participation in professional and/or specialty organizations is preferred.
- Maintain up‑to‑date credentials, including CV, license, DEA, CDS, board certification, ACLS certification, and documentation of hospital admitting privileges.
