General Responsibilities
  • Assessment, treatment, and patient care responsibilities delivered with a knowledge of patient growth and development appropriate to patients’ ages.
  • Identify and document initial observations and assessments of the patient’s need for immediate nursing action.
  • Systematically and accurately assess nursing needs to detect pertinent clinical changes.
  • Select, plan, evaluate, and document care based on this assessment.
  • Assess, intervene, and document care to meet patient educational, psychosocial, and discharge planning needs.
  • Initiate appropriate referrals to other departments, services, and/or outside agencies for patient care.
Direct Patient Care Responsibilities
  • Provide comprehensive patient care.
  • Initiate and follow through with patient and family teaching.
  • Collaborate with all healthcare team members and communicate patient information on shift‑to‑shift reports.
  • Utilize patient care standards in clinical practice.
  • Document pertinent information regarding patient’s response to treatment and progression toward goals.
  • Complete admission/transfer summary and/or discharge summary.
  • Seek clarification of physician orders that are unclear or inappropriate.
  • Interpret clinical data and notify the physician promptly of immediate management changes.
  • Administer intravenous medications in compliance with policies and procedures.
  • Transport patients.
  • Establish IV access and maintain lines.
  • Perform phlebotomy duties as necessary.
  • Assess and coordinate patients’ pain management.
  • Respond appropriately in crisis situations by demonstrating knowledge of emergency procedures, remaining calm, and functioning properly in emergencies.
Indirect Patient Care Responsibilities
  • Participate in interdisciplinary patient care rounds, presenting findings on patients.
  • Apply principles of infection control and safety.
  • Assist in the orientation of new personnel.
  • Provide clinical supervision of Certified Nursing Assistant, Ward Clerks, and other ancillary staff.
  • Deliver customer service with respect, flexibility, knowledge, confidence, professionalism, pleasant attitude, patience, and helpfulness in accordance with Customer Service Performance expectations.
  • Maintain established department policies and procedures, quality assurance programs, safety, environmental, and infection control standards; identify gaps and create necessary policies to fulfill them.
  • Monitor patients’ nutritional status and collaborate with the interdisciplinary team to ensure adequate nutrition to meet metabolic needs.
  • Understand and adhere to the Medical Center’s Code of Conduct.
  • Be familiar with the Medical Center’s Mission, Vision, and Values Statements.
Other Duties
  • Orient patients’ family to the new environment and develop rapport with patient families.
  • Relieve the Nurse Manager/Clinical Director as required.
  • Assist in data collection and analysis of Quality Assurance/CQI monitors; participate in implementation of follow‑up action.
  • Effectively utilize the hospital computer system in accordance with hospital policy.
  • Participate actively in Quality Improvement committees as assigned.
  • Assist other personnel as needed.
  • Stay current with trends relevant to the area of assignment.
  • Participate in continuing education activities; attend mandatory scheduled in‑service programs; share information gained at conferences with colleagues.
  • Respond to hospital codes (Code 9, Code Blue, Nurse Control, etc.) as assigned.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned to support the overall objectives of the department and organization.
  • Respond to internal/external disaster codes as assigned.
  • Participate in nursing committees as required.
