PositionSummary
The Pre-operative/ Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) Nurse administers careful care to outpatients and inpatients through monitoring, assessment, intervention, and ongoing reassessment. This occurs on admission prior to surgery and during phase I and II of discharge to home or transfer to an inpatient unit. Post-operative care includes patients recovering from anesthesia, including general, regional, and local anesthesia.
Responsibilities- Assess patients prior to surgery.
- Ensure informed operative and other essential consents are signed.
- Take and record vital statistics and verify that lab work and other ordered testing are reported to ensure patient readiness for surgery.
- Provide patient and family pre-operative education.
- Follow surgeon and anesthesia orders, including starting an intravenous line.
- Record all assessment data in the electronic medical record.
- Complete bedside face-to-face reports with Operating Room personnel preoperatively and postoperatively.
- Communicate effectively with surgeons and anesthesia providers.
- Assist anesthesia with peripheral nerve blocks.
- Understand and participate in all aspects of the Universal Protocol to prevent wrong-site/side/person surgery.
- Organize time, equipment, and supplies as needed, including monthly outdate checks of carts or areas containing medications and supplies.
- Demonstrate excellent postoperative assessment of Phase I patients and use critical thinking to respond effectively in all types of postoperative emergencies.
- Provide post-operative education to patients and families as ordered by the surgeon and ensure appropriate discharge equipment is ordered.
- Communicate effectively with all other ancillary departments and physicians.
Note:

- Graduate from an associate degree, baccalaureate degree, or diploma school of nursing.
- Current RN licensure in the state of Illinois.
- BLS on hire.
- ACLS and PALS within 6 months of hire.
- Previous ambulatory surgery, recovery room, or intensive care experience desirable.
- Pay ranges from $27.47/hour to $43.997/hour for an RN (rate of pay based on applicable years of experience).
Hours:
Monday–Friday 7:00 am – 3:30 pm with rotating call.
