BRIDGE INSPECTION ENGINEER (CIVIL ENGINEER IV)
This position is accountable for detailed inspection of bridges and structures throughout the district to fulfill the requirements of the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) National Bridge Inspection Standards (NBIS), district and state maintenance policies. The role includes managing the district's Bridge Inspection Specialist Team, preparing reports, and inputting data into the Bridge Inspection System (BIS) and Illinois Structure Information System (ISIS).
EssentialFunctions
- Plans, directs, and controls the district Bridge Inspection Specialist Team in maintaining compliance with NBIS.
- Conducts field inspections of fracture-critical structures, underwater bridges, scour analysis, and other requirements of NBIS.
- Inspects signs and lighting structures per the Sign Structure Inspection Manual.
- Detects structural problems, recommends actions, evaluates severity, and takes appropriate action.
- Performs investigations and evaluations of damaged bridges and deficiencies.
- Completes inspection reports and accurately enters required data into BIS and ISIS; requests and analyzes reports.
- Ensures safe operation of specialized equipment and vehicles.
- Stays current on NBIS and related technological developments through training.
- Trains, evaluates, and motivates staff for development and competence.
- Performs duties in compliance with safety rules and equitable treatment of all employees.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Current registration as a Licensed Professional Engineer or Licensed Structural Engineer in Illinois.
- Four years of experience in civil engineering.
- Successful completion of FHWA-NHI-130078 “Fracture Critical Inspection Techniques for Steel Bridges” course.
- Successful completion of FHWA / AASHTO Element Level Bridge Inspection course.
- Completion of FHWA-NHI-130056 “Safety Inspection of In-Service Bridges for Professional Engineers” within 12 months of acceptance.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Extensive district-wide and occasional state-wide travel, including overnight stays.
- Occasional overtime during nights and weekends.
- 24‑hour emergency on‑call availability.
- Ability to perform outdoor work in varied adverse conditions.
- Successful completion of a background check.
- Compliance with revolving-door restrictions and ethics disclosures as required by Illinois law.
