Primary Purpose

The Library Aide is responsible for the creation of an effective Media Center for use by students and staff members alike.

Qualifications

Education/Certification:

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Valid Texas educational aide certificate

Special Knowledge/

Skills:

  • Ability to abide by and enforce school district policies, administrative rules, regulations and directives.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with students, administrators, other district support staff, teachers, and the general public.
  • Ability to keep accurate records and reports.
  • Some knowledge of library materials, methods, and procedures.
  • Continues professional improvement.
  • Such other qualifications that the board of education may find acceptable.
  • Ability to get along well with others.
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality.
  • Strong computer skills including but not limited to use of data processing and spreadsheet computer software.
  • The employee’s physical condition shall be commensurate with the demands of the position.
  • Ability to work well with children.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.

Experience: Some experience working with children.

Major Responsibilities and Duties
  • Receives and processes new books by typing and affixing appropriate categorical code.
  • Assists in shelving new books, types and files catalog cards, assists students with reference assignments.
  • Files pamphlets and periodical materials, sorts and places returned books to appropriate shelves.
  • Assists students in locating books, types book orders, prepares inventory and circulation reports.
  • Inspects returned books for damage and repairs books as necessary.
  • Instructs student library helpers in work routines.
  • Refers students to school librarian for professional assistance.
  • Provides instruction related support services under the direction of teachers.
  • Provides support and assistance to the local school planning team.
  • Assists in the supervision of students during visit to the library and may supervise lunchroom and playground activities.
  • Participates and assists with the implementation of innovative education activities.
  • Assists students in understanding and completing classroom assignments.
  • Greets and directs visitors to appropriate areas of the school.
  • Operates computers, audio‑visual equipment such as videocassette recorders, and movie services to students under the supervision of the classroom teacher.
  • Assists in collecting and grading students’ homework assignments and examination materials under the supervision of the classroom teacher.
  • Creates an atmosphere for employee productivity and satisfaction.
  • Follows and implements measures to make the library a supportive element of the instruction program.
  • Additional duties as assigned by the Librarian or Principal.

Copier, personal computer, and audiovisual equipment.

Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:

Maintain emotional control under stress. Moderate standing, stooping, bending, and lifting.
