The Bus Monitor assists the driver in transporting students on a specialized education route. Responsibilities include ensuring student safety, managing student behavior, maintaining the bus, and supporting the driver with daily operational duties.

• Promote a positive, caring climate that ensures all students follow the student handbook and code of conduct.
• Ensure all students are safe and following safety rules; stand or walk on the bus only when it is stationary.
• Follow emergency procedures, including evacuation of students as needed and administering first aid when necessary.
• Assist the driver with daily cleaning, closing windows, pre‑trip and post‑trip inspections, and overall bus maintenance. Report any damages or required repairs to the driver on a daily basis.
• Assist the driver in preparing and collating reports for submission and maintaining an up‑to‑date route schedule.
• Maintain discipline on the bus. When disciplining students, consider their special needs and whether the behavior is a result of their condition. Document incidents, including the involved parties and witnesses, and collaborate with the driver to report to the Transportation Director if needed. Fill out a Discipline Conduct Form when required.
• Assign seats to students and manage conflicts between students, ensuring appropriate separation.
• Secure students who ride in child restraint seats and other safety equipment.
• Ensure that a child takes his or her belongings when leaving the bus.
• Sit on the bus in a manner that allows observation and accessibility to all students. Do not sit at the front of the bus when students are aboard.
• Maintain confidentiality of information related to the students transported.
• Attend all safety meetings and in‑service workshops. Provide a signed attendance record. If a Monitor must miss a meeting, obtain minutes, notes, and handouts from the transportation office.
• Prohibit the use of cellular devices while students are on the bus.
• Perform additional duties and responsibilities assigned by the supervisor.
