Academic Support for Three Children in Park City, Utah
Background to the role
A family based in Park City, Utah, is seeking an exceptional full‑time tutor to work with their three children, aged sixteen, fourteen and twelve, who attend a private school in Salt Lake City and public school in Park City.
The family relocated from London to Utah three years ago and their children have benefitted from one‑to‑one tuition alongside school. As the children enter a higher standard of academics, a tutor is required with greater subject expertise and the ability to provide strategy, structure and support for the children’s academic goals.
The eldest student is a highly capable and structured thinker with particular strengths in Math and Sciences, as well as being capable across English and History. He is a highly independent and self‑directed learner who has a clear sense of his own academic needs and goals, communicating these effectively to those working with him. He will be applying to colleges in two years.
Having previously played soccer at club level with aspirations of playing collegiately, he made the deliberate decision to redirect his focus toward academics while still playing on the varsity team is passionate about film and founded a film club at his school.
The fourteen year old student will be starting High School in the Fall, and is a straight A student who is highly capable across her subjects. She has navigated a challenging transition in her schooling, having moved from a private school in Salt Lake City to public school in Park City, where her grades have improved considerably. An area of academic focus for the student is her Mathematics, although significant progress has been made already over the past six months.
She has a mild learning disorder in reading, which affects her reading comprehension to a small extent, and she has recently started learning Spanish is passionate about dance, which she practices five days per week, and has a keen interest in pottery.
She is not a student who naturally self‑advocates or volunteers herself in a learning environment, however she is highly capable and hardworking, with the focused and disciplined mentality that her commitment to dance reflects, but she will need a tutor with confidence and presence to bring out the best in her. Of the three students, she is the one the family are most focused on with respect to the tutor’s support and guidance as she’s starting in high school.
The youngest student will be entering 8th grade. He is a very capable mathematician and a highly sociable individual with a charismatic and expressive personality. He is naturally creative and has a strong artistic flair, which the family would like to see further developed with the support of a tutor, alongside his academics.
All three students are motivated in their studies and hold themselves to high academic standards. However, they have not yet developed a genuine love of reading. Sparking this interest is an area of focus that applies to all three of the students.
The students maintain demanding schedules with their extracurricular activities, particularly dance and volleyball, and the tutor will need to work fl exibly around these commitments.
Duties of the tutor
The tutor will provide comprehensive academic support to all three students, each week working with them three weekdays after school and on both weekend days. A reduced timetable will also take place during school holidays. The tutor must be able to adapt their approach to meet the distinct needs of each student, encompassing both immediate needs and long‑term strategy towards academic ambitions.
An important principle for the family is that the students themselves should drive the relationship with the tutor. The tutor’s role is to respond to and build upon each student’s own motivations, directions and goals, rather than to impose a fixed structure upon them. At the outset the tutor should audit each student’s current knowledge level and technical skills, in order to identify and fill any gaps in their understanding and to form the basis of the curriculum the tutor will develop for each child.
