Spanish Medical Interpreter PRN

Job Description

Coordinates and delivers both interpretation (oral) and translation (written) services for individuals with limited English proficiency across all Intermountain Health facilities and virtual services.

PRN position. Incumbent will fill in for shifts as needed at Heber Valley Hospital and Park City Hospital. Shifts include weekdays, weekends, holidays, and graveyards. Variable hours; schedule to be discussed in interview.

• Interpret medical and general information with the highest degree of accuracy and completeness in consecutive, simultaneous, and sight translation modes for patients, families, and Intermountain Health staff.
• Interpret complex medical information, demonstrating expert knowledge of medical terminology and the healthcare system.
• Act as a cultural mediator, demonstrating cultural sensitivity and superior intercultural communication skills.
• Render unbiased interpretation to ensure accurate exchange of information in the proper cultural context.
• Adhere to the National Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice for Healthcare Interpreters, demonstrating knowledge of HIPAA, Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, Title III of the Americans with Disabilities Act, and Section 1557 of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.
• Manage time productively, displaying a proactive approach; respond to requests in a timely manner and provide staff with an estimated time of arrival for interpretation assignments.
• Refer staff to phone or video interpretation per guidelines.
• Use computer, software, and electronic tools for research, data entry and other communication purposes.
• Maintain accurate and complete records of all interpretation events; ensure data consistency across multiple platforms.
• Translate written material into one or more languages, ensuring meaning, context, and localization are maintained.
• Complete assignments in a timely manner with a high degree of accuracy.

• Successful completion of a pre‑hire skills assessment.
• Excellent oral and written command of both source and target language(s) at “Professional Proficiency” or Level 3 in the ILR scale (or equivalent).
• Proficient in consecutive, simultaneous, and sight translation with high accuracy.
• Ability to work effectively in a fast‑paced, high‑pressure environment; prioritize and multitask.
• Strong interpersonal verbal and written communication skills; ability to work independently or as part of a team.
• Certificate of completion from a 40‑hour Professional Medical Interpreter course.

• Two years of experience working as an interpreter in healthcare settings.
• Bachelor’s Degree in Interpretation or Translation, Languages, or Communications.
• National certification as a Healthcare or Medical Interpreter from CCHI or NBCMI;
  State Certified Medical Language Interpreter License by DOPL (Utah).
• Completion of a college‑level medical terminology course.
• Knowledge of EPIC.
• Ongoing need for employee to see and read information, labels, documents, monitors, identify equipment and supplies, and assess customer needs.
• Manual dexterity to manipulate equipment and supplies with precision.

$21.70 – $31.90 per hour; rate depends on experience.
