About the Position

Wheat Ridge Regional Center (WRRC) provides 24-hour treatment services in a safe and healthy environment for residents with intellectual or developmental disabilities. The Physical Therapist (Therapist III) performs complete and/or specific physical therapy assessments for intellectually disabled people by adapting musculoskeletal, neuromuscular, and gross motor development tests to meet their special needs, and by relating these to functional and health outcomes.

The therapist selects appropriate assessment tools, analyzes raw data, and makes recommendations to the interdisciplinary team.

Responsibilities
  • Determine which clients will benefit from PT intervention based upon diagnoses and clinical evaluation, and problem‑solve issues related to time and equipment constraints.
  • Apply PT theories and principles to develop individualized plans that meet the unique needs of intellectually disabled residents.
  • Develop individualized training objectives compliant with behavioral and physical challenges, addressing deficits for residents with cognitive and physical impairments.
  • Create plans of care, service programs, and objectives for identified needs, including health and safety issues related to contractures, gait problems, and immobility risks.
  • Develop learning and maintenance objectives/programs for residents’ PT needs.
  • Determine implementation methods by tailoring existing guidelines to the unique needs at WRRC.
  • Order or assist in developing adaptive positioning or therapy equipment and supplies to prevent deformity, reduce pain, or improve function.
  • Provide intensive training and role‑modeling to direct care staff using creative and innovative techniques.
  • Monitor progress and adapt programs as necessary to ensure expected gains and skill maintenance.
  • Design data points, collect and analyze data, and summarize information in the electronic health record.
  • Document progress and program status in the electronic health record per WRRC policies.
  • Revise flat‑lined programs to support further progress, often requiring creative strategies to increase participation.
  • Offer ongoing consultation and supervision to staff implementing written programs.
  • Participate and provide input in interdisciplinary team meetings, department meetings, and individual planning meetings.
  • Recommend goals and objectives related to PT needs to the .
  • Act as a resource for the PT Department, supporting integrity and quality of services in line with PT Standards of Practice.
  • Attend interdisciplinary meetings to discuss client progress.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned, including peer review, committee participation, budget support, and policy development.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Current, valid licensure with the Colorado Department of Regulatory Agencies (DORA) to practice Physical Therapy.
  • Two (2) years of experience in an occupational field related to the work assigned to this position.

  • Must possess a valid, non‑restricted Colorado Driver’s License; out‑of‑state holders must obtain a Colorado license within 30 days of hire.
  • Former state employees disciplined or resigned in lieu of termination must disclose this on the application and explain why it should not disqualify them.
  • Must pass a Tuberculosis (TB) test.
  • Travel required to drive state cars to group homes, programming, admin, and community sites.
  • Influenza immunization required.
