Equipment Operator

Description

This position is responsible for operating and maintaining County vehicles, heavy equipment, and performing manual labor activities.

• Operate equipment including pickups, single axle trucks, tandem axle trucks, tractor-trailers, rollers, water tankers, mowers, sweepers, loaders, backhoes, excavators, snowplows, sanders, motor graders, dozers, scrapers, paving equipment, milling machines, concrete mixers, mud jack pumps, curb machines, sprayers, and other construction and maintenance equipment.
• Perform a variety of road maintenance tasks such as pothole repair, concrete repair, asphalt overlays, culvert repair and maintenance, bridge repair, shoulder maintenance, ditch maintenance, shoveling, raking, fence construction, tree trimming, and other related tasks.
• Respond to emergency situations including blizzards, fires, floods, and other disasters.
• Perform snow and ice removal, including the application of anti-icing and deicing materials.
• Assist with placement of traffic control signage and provide traffic flagging during construction activities.
• Perform daily inspections on equipment and vehicles used.
• Provide good customer service and collaborate with supervisors to respond to customer service requests.
• Help ensure all equipment is properly maintained and perform maintenance/fabrication as needed.
• Perform manual labor with various hand tools or equipment, including shovels, picks, jackhammers, power saws, and other tools.
• Paint and sandblast structures.
• Install and repair guardrail, fencing, snow fence, culverts, and other road structures.
• Establish and maintain positive and effective working relationships with stakeholders involved in duties.
• Transport heavy machinery and vehicles to and from job locations.
• Perform miscellaneous minor maintenance work on vehicles and equipment.
• Collect debris along County roads.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

A high school diploma or GED is required. One year of education or experience in highway maintenance or equipment operation is preferred.

• Must possess a valid State of Colorado Commercial Driver License Class B upon hire, with complying insurance. Review of motor vehicle record is required at time of hire and periodically throughout employment.
• Must obtain a Commercial Driver License Class A to achieve career progression in this classification series.
• Must meet Department of Transportation physical exam and drug and alcohol testing requirements.
• Must have Flagger Certification.
• Must complete assigned training as required by the Department.
