Position Overview

The primary objective of EMS is to provide safe and compassionate ambulance and medical transportation while preserving patients' dignity and ensuring community safety. EMS personnel provide non‑emergency convalescent transfers, community event stand‑by, and emergency responses to assist in the provision of immediate care and transport for critically sick and injured patients at the level of training and authorization.

Essential Job Functions
  • Attend instruction sessions for orientation, EMS operations, compliance, and emergency vehicle operations; maintain EMS certification and other required programs.
  • Provide out‑of‑hospital care to patients and safe ambulance transport in consideration of statewide protocols and medical command direction, according to WV EMS Rules and Regulations.
  • Lift, carry, and balance a minimum of 12 SIBs alone and 250 lbs with assistance, at a height of 33 inches, for a distance of 10 feet (WVOEMS).
  • Hear, comprehend, and respond to spoken information from co‑workers, patients, physicians, dispatchers and common emergency scene sounds (WV EMS).
  • Verbally communicate in person, via telephone, and through telecommunications using English; meet the minimum vision requirements to operate a motor vehicle with the State of WV (WVOEMS).
  • Read and comprehend written materials under stressful conditions; document patient information using an approved WV EMS record system.
  • Demonstrate manual dexterity and fine motor skills, with the ability to perform all movements needed for providing quality patient care; bend, stoop, crawl, and walk on uneven surfaces.
  • Inspect EMS equipment to ensure adequate supplies, verify proper operation, refuel and check fluids of the assigned ambulance, and report needed maintenance.
  • Respond to callback or call‑in emergency situations.
  • Assist other emergency personnel as required and complete tasks assigned by company supervisors and management.
  • Maintain professional appearance and decorum; perform general maintenance and cleaning of stations, training facilities, and ambulances; be a self‑starter requiring little oversight and adaptable to change in a team‑based management structure.
  • Perform event stand‑by operations at sporting events, community festivals, and other events with significant numbers of people.
  • Respond to hazardous material incidents at the first‑responder level, function in other uncommon situations, and perform emergency operations during natural disasters and catastrophic events.
  • Have a basic understanding of stress response and methods to ensure personal well‑being; understand body substance isolation and patients' privacy rights under HIPAA.
  • Interact and assist professionally with a variety of outside agencies and personnel, including medical facility staff such as physicians, nurses, aides, clerical staff, adult/child protective services, social workers, morticians, medical examiners, law enforcement, fire/rescue, and communication personnel.
