Description:
The unit consists of 18 beds, all private rooms with negative pressure capability for COVID patients.
Ratios typically range from 1:2, with 1:1 for CRRT/Organ Donation and may extend to 1:3 in overflow situations.
The average daily census is approximately 13 patients.
Common diagnoses and types of patients include sepsis, pneumonia, COVID, congestive heart failure, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, diabetic keto acidosis, overdose, renal failure, neurosurgeries, general surgery, and occasional myocardial infarction and vascular patients.
Nurses are required to titrate drips within ordered parameters.
ICU nurses are responsible for care and removal of central lines.
Charge nurse is present Monday through Friday on day shifts and may carry an assignment during high census.
Night and weekend charge nurses take assignments as well.
At least 1-2 patient care technicians are available depending on census and staffing.
An intensivist is in-house from 7 AM to 7 PM daily, alongside residents.
A hospitalist provides overnight coverage.
Respiratory therapy is available 24/7 in the ICU.The unit is equipped with ventilators, CPAP, BiPAP, and high flow equipment.
ICU staff are responsible for monitoring, interpretation, and admission to the system.
Patients may be monitored with backup from remote telemetry technicians.
Self-scheduling and block scheduling are permissible, subject to unit needs, but block scheduling is not guaranteed.
Every other weekend, both days and nights may be required.
Staff may need to float to stepdown and medical-surgical units as necessary.
Scrub color is royal blue, and scrub jackets must be actual scrub jackets without hoods or sweat jackets.
Two shifts of general/floor orientation are required, and education competencies must be completed before arrival on assignment.
A pharmacist is available on the unit daily from 7 AM to 4:30 PM.Cancellation policy allows for two shifts to be canceled per 13-week assignment.
Charting system utilized is EPIC.
