Responsible on a 24-hour basis to coordinate and organize surgical patient care. Collaborates with surgeon and anesthesia personnel to ensure timely, safe, quality care. Utilized as a resource/expert providing direct/indirect care as needed. Will demonstrate knowledge, skill, and competency in the specific specialty (service line). Coordinates and directs service line team members via orientation, competency validation, and instruction. Supports perioperative management team by demonstrating effective leadership, communication and conflict resolution skills.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE:
  • Current Registered Nurse license issued by the state in which services will be provided or current multi-state Registered Nurse license through the enhanced Nurse Licensure Compact (eNLC).
  • Obtain certification in Basic Life Support within 30 days of hire date.
EXPERIENCE:
  • Two (2) years’ experience in surgery.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE:
  • Graduate of an accredited nursing program with Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing.
  • CNOR Certification.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Certification.
EXPERIENCE:
  • Two (2) years of surgery experience in a clinical specialty (service line).
CORE

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Conducts initial and ongoing rounds throughout the day. Communicates with charge RN, team members, surgeons, anesthesia providers, SDC staff, core techs, sterile processing dept. and PACU staff to ensure cases proceed as planned. Coordinates daily operating room activities starting and acts as a resource for all members of the team.
  • At a minimum, reviews O.R. schedule one week in advance for specific case needs. Assesses need for items such as: equipment, implants, specialty items, and potential for staff education. Conducts a review of schedule day prior for any changes.
  • Communicates directly with physicians and service line team members regarding new procedures and/or supply requests. Makes appropriate changes to preference cards.
  • Expedites first case on time starts and room turnover. Strives to assist team in meeting all O.R. efficiency and quality benchmarks.
  • Follows Value Analysis policy and procedures for new supply/equipment requests. Coordinates trials/in-services with appropriate Materials Management staff. Actively participates in the annual equipment planning process including the acquisition of quotes.
  • Participates in inventory management by adjusting PAR levels as needed, monitoring for expiring products, revising custom packs, and performing value analysis functions seeking potential cost savings/containment.
  • Provides relief for staff breaks as needed to maintain patient flow.
  • Oversees and manages service line preference cards and instrumentation trays to ensure efficient use of physician and staff time as well as efficient use of supplies. Makes any changes needed in a timely manner.
  • Works collaboratively with all perioperative team members including Core Techs and Sterile Processing staff to ensure all supplies and equipment necessary for cases are available when needed.
  • Contacts vendor representatives per established policies and procedures to obtain necessary implants/instruments/specialty items for cases. Monitors vendors in the patient care areas.
  • Leads performance management initiatives including prep for regulatory surveys.
  • Maintains clinical expertise and demonstrates ability to conduct quality/environmental surveillance auditing.
