Nature of Work

Reports to the Wirt County Headquarters. Performs skilled work in the construction and maintenance of highways, operating motorized equipment such as skid steer, utility tractor, aerial bucket truck, front‑end loader, tandem‑axle truck, and snowplow. Responsible for major and minor repairs to highways, culverts, and bridge structures, mechanical repairs, and equipment maintenance (cleaning, lubricating, checking fluid levels). May be exposed to hazardous conditions and inclement weather.

Performs related tasks including flagging, erecting traffic control signs, barricades, shoveling, cleaning culverts, mowing, and brush cutting. The selected applicant will be placed in a U.S. Department of Labor apprenticeship program. Progression is based on hours, proficiency, training, and maintaining a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL). The WVDOT schedules irregular hours and may require shift work, weekends, and more than 40 hours per week.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Operate hydraulic crane.
  • Utilize heavy motorized equipment to excavate, backfill, grade, or level soil and aggregate.
  • Grade surfaces, roll or compact soil and aggregate.
  • Lead or train lower‑level equipment operators.
  • Assist the Core Driller in positioning the drilling rig.
  • Add rods or augers to drill.
  • Remove core samples from the core barrel.
  • Assist in cleaning and maintenance of the drilling rig and related tools and equipment.
  • Install steel piling in pre‑drilled holes.
  • Clean the drilling site of debris after drilling.
  • Set and detonate explosive charges for earth removal.
  • Travel may be required; valid driver’s license required.
  • Maintain a valid Class A or Class B Commercial Driver License (CDL).
Skills and Knowledge
  • Knowledge of safety practices used in structural steel construction.
  • Knowledge of procedures, techniques, and equipment used in the area of assignment.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and applicable safety standards and procedures in the area of assignment.
  • Basic blueprint reading.
  • General construction and maintenance practices.
  • Maintenance, repair, and overhaul of gasoline and diesel‑powered engines and components.
  • Operation of motor‑driven equipment.
  • Diagnose mechanical problems and determine repair procedures.
  • Operate basic hand and power tools.
  • Read operation manuals, blueprints, and specifications in the area of assignment.
  • Operate motorized equipment in the area of assignment.
  • Perform skilled trades work in bridge construction and maintenance.
  • Operate and maintain highway equipment and attachments.
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Maintain accurate records of daily maintenance activities and gauges and meters used in HVAC systems.
  • Climb high steel structures.
  • Train and work cooperatively with other skilled and semi‑skilled workers.
Minimum Requirements Required Training/Education
  • No formal education required.
Required Experience
  • Valid Class A or Class B CDL.
  • Four (4) years of full‑time or equivalent part‑time paid experience operating heavy equipment such as bulldozers, end loaders, dump trucks, drillers, etc.
  • Alternate experience:
    Successful completion of an approved vocational school program may substitute for two (2) years of the required experience.
