The Postgraduate Neonatal Intensive Care Nursing Program is a one-year, clinically supported employment model designed for registered nurses seeking to advance their expertise in Neonatal Intensive Care (NICU).
As a Registered Nurse in this program, you will play a vital role in delivering safe, high-quality, and holistic care to critically ill newborns, supporting their journey from admission to discharge. You will work collaboratively with families, multidisciplinary teams, and healthcare professionals to ensure the best possible outcomes for neonates.
This program is delivered in partnership with La Trobe University, combining academic excellence with hands‑on clinical training. You will undertake postgraduate studies while receiving structured mentorship, clinical supervision, and professional development in a NICU setting. This approach ensures you apply your learning in real-time, enhancing your clinical decision‑making, technical proficiency, and confidence in neonatal care.
A regular day will see you:- Provide specialised nursing care to critically ill newborns in a NICU environment.
- Work collaboratively with families and healthcare teams to support neonatal health outcomes.
- Apply evidence-based practice to deliver safe and effective care.
- Develop advanced clinical skills through structured mentorship and supervision.
- Strengthen clinical decision-making and technical proficiency in neonatal care.

About youYou are a dedicated and motivated Registered Nurse looking to specialise in Neonatal Intensive Care (NICU). With a strong foundation in acute care nursing, you are eager to expand your expertise through structured clinical training and postgraduate studies.
- Current registration as a Registered Nurse Division 1 with AHPRA.
- Minimum one year of acute care nursing experience, preferably in paediatrics, neonatal, or intensive care.
- Enrolment in a postgraduate neonatal intensive care program at a partner university as part of the employment model.
- Ability to work in a high-acuity, fast-paced clinical environment while balancing academic responsibilities.
- Passionate about neonatal care, committed to improving health outcomes for critically ill newborns.
- Strong clinical and critical thinking skills, able to assess and respond to complex neonatal conditions.
- Collaborative and team-oriented, working effectively with multidisciplinary teams and families.
- Resilient and adaptable, able to manage the demands of intensive care nursing and postgraduate study.
