Under limited supervision, designs, implements and evaluates systemwide writing programs and services in support of the Library’s strategic priorities.

Specific Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities required include:

  • Knowledge of standard office procedures and practices.
  • Ability to use Library resources effectively and efficiently.
  • Ability to apply proficient level of English grammar and composition including proofing, editing, and writing style principles and techniques.
  • Skill in reviewing work for correctness, completeness and accuracy.
  • Skill in prioritizing, coordinating, and scheduling work to allow for efficient and effective completion of the work assignment.
  • Skill in exercising initiative, judgment, discretion and decision making to integrate organizational priorities, meet deadlines, and achieve objectives.
  • Skills necessary to develop and maintain effective and appropriate working relationships with co-workers, customers, vendors, community agencies, and/or representatives of other agencies.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Complies with Cuyahoga County Public Library’s policies, rules, guidelines, procedures, requirements, standards, and practices applicable to the job, including (but not limited to) work scheduling and attendance, customer service, use of Library property, computer use, personal conduct, and confidentiality.
  • Plans, designs, and coordinates Library writing programs, events, and services to meet the needs and interests of writers in support of the Library’s Strategic Plan. Coordinates the logistics of program and implementation with branch staff.
  • Proposes new and creative programming initiatives to expand the Library's writing programming efforts to meet the needs of the library community; provides leadership and support for the execution of said initiatives.
  • Participates in collaborative program planning with other divisions and departments. Evaluates existing library programs, ensuring that outcomes are achieved. Recommends modifications or updates when necessary.
  • Cultivates relationships with writers, authors and external community partners to develop, build, facilitate and enhance the Library's writing programs and opportunities.
  • Collaborates with the Youth Programming Department to develop and implement writing events and programs for youth and families. Provides support for Youth and Teen staff leading writing groups.
  • Provides direct library services such as reference and readers’ advisory to a diverse group of customers in the Writers' Center, and provides services and technology‑related guidance, including instruction in the use of library equipment, software and computers, to meet the needs of customers.
  • Publicizes library writing resources and services.
  • Assists the Adult Programming and Development Teams with Author events.
SUMMARY MINIMUM EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
  • Master's Degree required, MLIS preferred, from an accredited college or university in a related field.
  • At least two years of programming experience working with the public, preferably in a library setting.
OTHER TESTING/LICENSES REQUIRED
  • A valid driver's license for travel between Library locations is required, as is in‑force automobile insurance and reliable personal transportation.
  • A criminal background check is required, and pre‑employment drug screens.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITION
  • Occasional stooping or bending. Occasional very light lifting, such as three or four reams of paper or books (up to 25 pounds) may be required.
  • No major sources of working conditions discomfort, i.e. standard work environment with possible minor inconveniences due to occasional noise, crowded working conditions, and/or minor heating, cooling or ventilation problems.
  • Occasional minor discomforts from near‑continual computer terminal use.
