This position primarily supports bridge and tunnel inspection projects, including routine, in‑depth, and special inspections in accordance with applicable state and federal requirements. The Engineer III is responsible for assisting in the planning, execution, and documentation of inspections, including preparation of field notes, defect identification, and development of repair recommendations.
The role includes performing and supporting as‑inspected load ratings using established methodologies and software, as well as assisting in the evaluation of structural capacity and condition. The Engineer III works closely with Project Managers and Team Leaders to support inspection program delivery, report preparation, and client coordination.
This position also involves responding to emergency inspection requests, including rapid condition assessments following incidents or structural concerns, and supporting the development of immediate repair or stabilization recommendations.
The Engineer III applies standard engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria across a range of inspection and rehabilitation projects. Responsibilities may also include mentoring junior staff, reviewing work products, and contributing to the continuous improvement of inspection and data management processes.
As part of the team, you will contribute to the successful delivery of inspection and asset management services for a diverse portfolio of transportation infrastructure clients.
What You’ll Do- Completes assigned work within the schedule and number of hours provided.
- Assist in the development of project specifications.
- Responsible for development of discipline specific engineering project elements/deliverables such as reports, designs, and plans.
- Aids in the coordination and productivity of project team members.
- Provides technical guidance to less experienced engineering project team members.
- Works closely with other disciplines and on multi‑discipline projects.
- Performs quality control reviews of discipline‑specific engineering project elements/deliverables.
- Assists with coordination and planning of schedules, hours, and distribution of work within discipline.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering and 4 years of relevant experience, or
- Master’s degree in Engineering and 3 years of relevant experience, or
- PhD in Engineering and 2 years of relevant experience
- Perform and supervise bridge inspection services including scheduling, inspections, report writing and review, and database management.
- Perform and/or review structural load rating calculations of various bridges.
- Develop project inspection and safety criteria, load rating calculations, and estimating National Bridge Element quantities and costs.
- Cost control on projects and quality control within bridge discipline.
- Resolve problems, interpret engineering specifications, investigate structural deficiencies and field engineering difficulties, and coordinate schedules.
- Manage single and multi‑discipline structural engineering projects.
- Provide technical guidance and mentoring of project team members, including other engineers and technical support staff such as Assistant Team Leaders and Subconsultants.
- Lead a small team of engineers in the execution of project design and production on both small and large projects.
- Prepare and check condition survey drawings and/or specifications.
- Review and check engineering work completed by others.
- Oversee planning and inspection phases of projects.
- Market to clients in pursuit of additional projects.
- PE licensure in the states of NJ and NY.
- Bridge inspection experience with local agencies such as PANYNJ, NJ Transit, NJTA and/or NJDOT.
