Compensation: $55,000–$80,000 (based on experience + benefits)
Company OverviewOur client is a multidisciplinary engineering firm delivering geotechnical, environmental, and civil-site solutions for commercial and public-sector clients. Their team works on technically demanding projects involving deep excavations, retaining structures, foundation systems, subsurface investigations, and geotechnical instrumentation.
Position OverviewThe Staff Engineer will support geotechnical, site/civil, and environmental engineering projects through field inspections, testing, calculations, reporting, and project coordination. This is an early-career engineering role intended for candidates with a related engineering degree and limited to moderate field experience. The ideal candidate is technically curious, detail-oriented, and comfortable working in both office and field environments.
Key Responsibilities- Conduct site inspections to monitor progress and verify conformance with specifications and procedures
- Support design work for assigned portions of engineering projects
- Perform engineering calculations using standard formulas and technical methods
- Conduct routine geotechnical laboratory checks and material testing
- Lead or support concrete and rebar inspection testing
- Prepare samples of unapproved materials for laboratory testing
- Perform research and prepare technical reports and project documentation
- Coordinate preparation and delivery of project deliverables, design documents, and bid packages
- Review designs for compliance with engineering principles, company standards, contract requirements, and specifications
- Classify soils and apply geotechnical knowledge to construction-related engineering issues
- Support drilling oversight, monitoring well installation, and soil or groundwater sampling when needed
- Conduct or participate in environmental studies and prepare environmental reports
- Provide project status and progress updates to customers, project teams, and management
- Provide guidance to junior staff and interns when needed
- Travel to project sites as required, including possible out-of-state travel
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or another applicable engineering discipline
- 0–3 years of site/civil, geotechnical, or environmental engineering experience
- Ability to review and understand plans, specifications, reports, grading plans, utility plans, foundation details, structural drawings, and applicable regulations
- Experience or familiarity with inspection of compacted fills, footings, ground improvement, deep foundations, retaining walls, utilities, asphalt, concrete, and sitework elements
- 40-hour OSHA HAZWOPER certification
- ACI, NICET, NJ DCA Special Inspector, and Nuclear Densometer certification
- Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation to access job sites
- Proficiency or familiarity with AutoCAD, Autodesk Civil 3D, Nitro Pro, GSLOPE, Key Wall, Rocscience, MS Word, Excel, and Adobe
- Ability to use field tools such as a lump hammer, shovel, hand auger, and Nuclear Density Gauge
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather and site conditions
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Previous internship or construction experience
- Registered Professional Engineer (PE) license
- Ability to become licensed within 6 months of starting the position
