Position: Reporter I - Elections - Temporary

We’re looking for a reporter to help us expand LAist’s award-winning voter guides. This is a 12-week temporary position (September 2026 to November 2026) aimed at reporting, writing and producing voter guides for LAist’s Voter Game Plan and related election coverage.

We’re looking for reporters who are adept at reporting and filing stories on deadline.

The ideal candidate understands digital platforms, including audience needs and how to engage readers. Top candidates will be keen to collaborate with our Voter Game Plan team and ready to jump in to help with story production in our CMS and reporting across a variety of election topics.

We love L.A. and Orange County, and we take pride in being a meaningful source of election information for millions of voters here. We are looking for a reporter who will likewise be motivated to contribute to our best-in-class voter guide product.

There are preferred candidates for this role.


* This is a temporary three-month role.

Expected Compensation Range: $41.93 - $44 per hour . The exact salary rate is determined by experience and education related to the role, organizational compensation structure, and internal equity.

Location:Hybrid, Pasadena, CA

Position Responsibilities:
  • Provide coverage and voter guides on Southern California election issues
  • Report and produce news stories and voter guides on deadline for radio, web and social media
  • Use audience engagement as a reporting tool
  • Other duties as assigned
Required

Education and Experience:
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience
  • Two or more years of reporting or professional journalism or applicable experience
Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:
  • Demonstrated digital news and web production skills
  • Proven ability to report accurately and quickly and meet deadlines
  • Strong writing, reporting and interviewing skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively

  • Must be able to perform the essential duties of the position with or without reasonable accommodation
