This is a grant-funded position through August 31, 2027. Renewal is on an annual basis, however, it is not guaranteed.

This is an 11-month position.

Upward Bound Math-Science (UBMS) at Pasadena City College is a college completion program that places emphasis on STEM college and career exploration. Funded by the US Department of Education, UBMS serves high school students attending Pasadena Unified School District or El Monte Unified High School District. To qualify for UBMS, Scholars must be US Citizens or Residents who are:
1) First Generation College-Bound;
2) At Risk for Academic Failure; and/or
3) Low Income per Federal Guidelines.

Under the direction of the Director for Upward Bound Math-Science, the Educational Advisor directly supports the attainment of all eight Project Objectives:
1) Academic Performance (GPA);
2) Academic Performance on Standardized Tests;
3) Secondary School Retention and Graduation;
4) Secondary School Graduation with a Rigorous Program of Study (A-G courses);
5) Post Secondary Enrollment;
6) Post Secondary Completion;
7) Recruitment;
8) Two-thirds Low Income & First Generation Students. To achieve this, the incumbent recruits, retains, and facilitates Educational Advisement for cohorts of up to 70 students on topics that include course selection, study skills, personal soft skills development, college and career exploration and preparation, assessment tests (SBAC, SAT/ACT), financial aid information, admissions requirements to diverse postsecondary institutions, assistance with financial aid application and college admissions process.

Furthermore, the Educational Advisor fosters and cultivates parental involvement in preparing high school students for college, collaborates with community partnerships, and supports the planning and implementing of year-round Educational Activities that include Saturday Academies, the 6-Week Summer Commuter Program and 5-Day Environmental Science Retreat.

Examples of Duties
  • Under the direction of a supervisor, the Educational Advisor provides services in support of students enrolling in college, retaining students pursuing educational goals and helping students complete educational, career or program/department goals.
  • Understand and relay general information regarding policies and procedures in individual or group format to staff and students.
  • Assist students in navigating processes including completing appropriate paperwork such as petitions, forms, requests, and college and financial aid applications.
  • Conduct group presentations to various audiences including prospective students, students, parents, community members, faculty and staff regarding services related to the goals of the college/department/program.
  • Organizes events related to departmental goals and student needs.
  • Prepares reports as needed.
  • Serves as a liaison between entities critical to the success of the department such as college and high school, college and community organization, department to department, etc.
  • Communicate information in oral, written and electronic format in a clear manner.
  • Collects information from prospective students/students as needed.
  • Maintains data for reporting purposes and submits reports as required by department/program.
  • Performs outreach, recruitment and selection of students in accordance with department/program selection criteria, as necessary per grant/program requirements.
  • Provides academic, career and personal advisement to participants, as necessary per grant/program requirements.
  • Monitors student involvement and progress, as necessary per grant/program requirements.
  • Supports all activities related to summer program activities, as necessary per grant/program requirements.
  • Reviews paperwork for accuracy as directed by a supervisor.
