Purpose/Summary

The Substitute Teacher will play a vital role in maintaining a positive and productive learning environment in the absence of the regular classroom teacher. They will implement lesson plans, manage the classroom environment, and ensure student safety and engagement. They may also fill in for teaching assistants and/or front office administrative staff as needed. This is a fully on-site, in-person position based on Chandler’s campus in Pasadena.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities Substitute Teaching
  • Implement lesson plans and classroom routines provided by the regular classroom teacher.
  • Manage student behavior and promote a respectful and inclusive atmosphere.
  • Support student learning and encourage participation in planned activities.
  • Maintain a safe and controlled classroom aligned with school policies and expectations.
  • Collaborate with school staff and administrators to address any issues or concerns.
  • Supervise students during instructional and non-instructional times (e.g., recess and lunch).
  • Communicate effectively and promptly with colleagues, administrators, and parents, as needed.
  • Complete required documentation and reports, such as attendance and incident reports.
  • Willingness to participate in school-wide initiatives and leadership roles, as well as hold extracurricular activities.

Teaching Assistance
  • Provide instructional support at the direction of classroom teachers.
  • Work with students in small and large groups as part of differentiated instruction.
  • Complete preparation of materials for lessons and provide support for grading and feedback at direction of classroom teachers.
  • Supervise students during recess and lunch, as well as during transitions between classroom spaces, and maintain a safe and inclusive environment. Report any behavior concerns and/or injuries to classroom teachers, Lower School Director, and any other relevant personnel.
  • Promote students’ social-emotional learning and development.
  • Lead and facilitate school experiences for students who stay for extended days.
  • Provide instructional coverage for classroom teachers during professional development or meetings.
Front Office Administrative Assistance
  • Greet and assist visitors, parents, and students in a professional and friendly manner.
  • Answer and route phone calls, take messages, and respond to inquiries.
  • Manage student attendance, including receiving parent communications, updating records, and notifying faculty, as needed.
  • Support daily office functions such as mail distribution, copying, and maintaining organized spaces.
  • Provide administrative support to the Division Director, including scheduling, calendar updates, and document preparation when requested.
  • Follow established school procedures for safety, communication, and student check-in/out.
Skills & Competencies
  • Clear and professional verbal, written, and interpersonal communication with students, colleagues, and parents.
  • Demonstrated ability to navigate a wide variety of challenges, including problem solving and conflict resolution.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and adapt to a range of subjects and grade levels (K-8).
  • Capable of integrating educational technology effectively into teaching and activities, including the use of learning management systems.
