After-School Activities Instructor

Overview

The City of Pasadena is seeking talented, creative, passionate, and experienced instructors to develop after school programming for school‑age children in the After School Adventures Program. These are part‑time positions working up to 19 hours per week.

• Develop curriculum and implement lessons and workshops in recreational sports, fitness and wellness, arts and crafts, dance, drama, music, science, and nature.
• Lead groups of children, develop recreational programming, and instruct age‑appropriate lessons daily.
• Plan schedules, establish program outcomes, create timelines, and prepare necessary resources for each site.
• Delegate tasks to Recreation Leaders, Interns, and Volunteers, and identify tasks that others can handle.
• Maintain a safe, supportive environment, supervise participants, and implement positive reinforcement.
• Serve as a substitute for the Site Coordinator and provide support to other recreation sites as needed.
• Determine, recommend, and manage supplies and equipment, ensuring they are transported and secured.
• Observe and take precautions to ensure participant safety and security.
• Promote positive public relations for the City and build community relationships with park, after‑school site, and other City Departments.
• Maintain records (attendance, progress, planning proposals, accident reports) and submit reports promptly.

• Self‑Management – shows personal organization, self‑discipline, and dependability.

• Minimum of one year of recent experience teaching recreational activities in at least one of the program areas listed above or one year of education in Recreation/Physical Education or a related field, or a combination of both.

• Two or more years of recent experience teaching recreational activities for youth and/or adults will be deemed most qualified.

The selection process may include a combination of training and experience evaluation, subject matter expert review, and the most highly qualified candidates may be invited to participate in a written, structured interview, performance examination, and/or departmental selection interview.
