Substation Design Engineer - Senior Level
Job Location s: US-CA-Pasadena
OverviewResponsible for the design of deliverables associated with substation projects supporting one of our largest electric utility clients in Southern California. The substation Protection & Control design deliverables include one-line & three-line diagrams, AC & DC elementary & logic diagrams, front & rear panel elevations and wiring, supervisory & control drawings, electrical vendor equipment wiring diagrams, complete cable schedule and bill of materials.
The substation physical design deliverables include general arrangement drawings, electrical equipment plan & elevation drawings, above & below grade conduit & grounding drawings, relay house layout and complete bill of materials. The Senior Substation Engineer will report directly to the Substation Design Manager.
- Leads substation P&C and/or physical design, including the preparation of field notes, drawings, specifications, and estimates.
- Performs careful QA/QC review activities submitted by junior engineers to ensure a quality product.
- Prepares computer assisted design and construction drawings of a complex nature with neatness and a minimum of errors.
- Performs engineering calculations such as AC and DC load calculations required to properly size auxiliary systems.
- Performs engineering calculations such as conduit and bus sizing, lighting & lightning analysis, and grounding grid analysis.
- Ensures all designs conform to client and industry standards.
- Communicates and coordinates project activities with project manager, client, and others as needed.
- Utilizes client and/or company information system to track and update design activities.
- Attends job site meetings to gather scope of work.
- May provide field support during construction.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Required
- Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from an ABET approved college or university.
- 10+ years of experience working in substation design or similar with utility or consulting engineering firm.
- Proficient using Microsoft Office suite (e.g., Excel, Word, and Outlook).
- Strong analytical, problem-solving skills, and attention to detail.
- Experience with AutoCAD and/or Micro Station.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Preferred
- Professional Engineer's License in Electrical Engineering preferred but not required.
- Experience with substation design and construction standards for electric utilities in California is highly desirable.

Wage Data Per State RequirementsSalary range for this position is $140,000 - $170,000. The starting salary will be commensurate with skill, education, experience, and working environment.
Work EnvironmentThis job operates in a professional office environment and uses standard office equipment such as computers and phones.
Physical Demands- Ability to sit/stand for up to 8 hours per day.
- Ability to move freely for up to 8 hours per day.
