Overview

Must be a US Person or Permanent Resident. Duration: 14 month contract position with potential to be extended or converted. W2 with full benefits, 9/80 Work Schedule.

Location:

NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, CA (onsite). Offer contingent on ability to successfully pass a background check, driving check, and drug screen. Salary Range: $50.00 to $75.00 hourly. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. The range displayed on each job posting reflects the minimum and maximum target for new hire salaries for the position.

Facilities Mechanical Engineer (HVAC Design) – Regular Full-Time Professional – Pasadena, CA, US

Job Description

Facilities Management is responsible for the overall physical development and maintenance of the laboratory. The mission of the department is to provide superior logistics, advanced workplaces, and resilient infrastructure to enable optimal Laboratory operations. Facilities personnel are responsible for the overall development and maintenance of the JPL physical property which resides on 167 acres, with 2.5 million square feet of offices and laboratories in 128 buildings, housing over 6000 people.

The mission of the division is to provide a safe environment that promotes the advancement and transfer of knowledge in support of JPL’s projects and missions. In this role you will be a member of the Facilities Engineering Section and will report to the Supervisor of the Facilities Engineering and Design Group. This is a TEMPORARY BACKFILL position.

Responsibilities
  • Design mechanical systems to comply with various project scopes of work in accordance with applicable standards and regulations including the California Mechanical Code.
  • Consult with project requesters to determine system requirements and provide requested services while meeting safety, code, and budgetary requirements.
  • Conduct building system assessments to evaluate conditions, operations, and maintenance requirements of building mechanical systems.
  • Provide technical assistance and guidance to operations and maintenance personnel for issues on mechanical systems. Support faculty, consultants, and field personnel, as required.
  • Maintain accurate documentation on mechanical system configurations and capacities.
  • Partner with internal organizations (safety, environmental, security, acquisitions), facilities construction and maintenance personnel, and other facilities engineering and design team members, on the development and execution of Lab construction projects.
  • Verify and ensure that new mechanical building systems are compatible with existing building infrastructure.
  • Maintain files/records/operational data related to the assigned contract.
  • Prepare activity progress reports.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Required Skills
  • BA degree in Mechanical Engineering or related technical degree with typically 9+ years related work experience.
  • Strong experience in Facilities Design/Construction projects of moderate complexity, demonstrating knowledge of building codes and industry best practices.
  • Familiarity with Mechanical Engineering design and development of construction drawings for offices, clean rooms, and laboratory facilities.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, as well as strong interpersonal, meditating and project management skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks, prioritize effectively, and work independently when needed.
  • Demonstrated understanding of principles of LEED and Building Commissioning.
  • Advanced skills in AutoCAD, competence with Bluebeam, and Microsoft applications including Excel, Word, and Project.
Desired Skills
  • MA/MS degree in Mechanical Engineering with 7+ years of related experience.
  • Professional engineering license or progress toward licensure.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, team working, and project organizational skills.
  • Strong skillset in Mechanical Engineering design and development of construction drawings for clean rooms, and laboratory facilities.
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD drawing, scheduling, and budgeting.
