As a member of CLA’s CAAS practice, you will be an integral part of the client‑service team and work directly 1:1 with our clients to provide customized accounting services that support their business or organization.
CLA is looking for a Controller with nonprofit industry experience to join our CAAS (Client Accounting & Advisory Services) practice based in any of our Southern California office locations (Irvine, Century City/LA, Carlsbad, Ontario/Inland Empire, or Pasadena).
Job Description- Develop internal control policies, guidelines, and procedures for activities such as budget administration, cash and credit management, and accounting.
- Coordinate and direct the financial planning, budgeting, procurements, or investment activities for all or part of an organization; prepare financial information.
- Prepare or direct the preparation of financial statements, business activity reports, financial position forecasts, budgets, or reports required by regulatory agencies.
- Evaluate needs for procurement of funds and investment of surpluses and make appropriate recommendations.
- Monitor ratio and key performance indicators (KPI).
- Monitor and evaluate the performance of accounting and other financial staff, recommending and implementing actions.
- Advise management on short‑term and long‑term financial objectives, policies, and actions.
- Communicate regularly with boards, bankers, investors, constituents, etc.; prepare for and/or host board presentations.
- Education:
Bachelor’s degree is required. A combination of related experience, education, and training may be accepted in lieu of a degree. CPA certification is preferred but not required. - Experience:
6 years of relevant accounting and/or financial experience is required (nonprofit industry and back‑office accounting experience is highly preferred). Public accounting experience preferred. - Aptitude for developing and maintaining comprehensive knowledge of accounting software and systems. Quick Books experience is preferred.
- Proficiency with applicable software (Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook, etc.).
- Travel:
Primarily in‑office work with frequent local travel to client sites and occasional non‑local or overnight travel for client visits, training, meetings, or other business‑related purposes.
- Understanding of generally accepted accounting principles (FASB/SFAS) or other comprehensive basis of accounting.
- Strong organization skills, goal orientation, and self‑motivation.
- Ability to handle pressure in a positive professional manner.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, clear, concise, and considerate of others’ needs.
- Ability to work cooperatively with others and value diverse contributions.
- Proven success in managing work and key client relationships to exceed client expectations.

Compensation range in California: $112,700 – $190,000.
