Role DescriptionThe South Sudan Country Director will lead one of Mother Strong’s largest and most impactful programs, currently serving nearly 5,000 single mothers in communities surrounding Juba. This is a hands‑on, startup‑style leadership role at the intersection of technology, field operations, and humanitarian impact.
Mother Strong is a tech‑enabled program centered on a mobile app and digital systems for cash transfers, attendance tracking, job creation, and outcomes monitoring. A core innovation of the program is its ability to deliver instant cash transfers to mothers anywhere in the world, without requiring a smartphone or internet access
, enabling reliable support even in highly resource‑constrained and refugee settings. The Country Director will ensure these systems work in real‑world conditions, while keeping the needs and wellbeing of mothers and children at the center of implementation.
The role requires independence, strong execution skills, comfort with ambiguity, and the ability to build partnerships in very low‑resource and complex settings.
Key Responsibilities Program Leadership & Operations- Support the real‑world deployment and continuous improvement of Mother Strong’s CBI program ensuring it functions reliably for participants
- Own day‑to‑day performance and quality of the Mother Strong program in South Sudan.
- Translate the global program model and app‑based systems into reliable field operations.
- Oversee enrollment, school coordination, cash transfer workflows, and community engagement.
- Establish and maintain clear operational processes for attendance verification, merchant coordination, and participant support.
- Identify operational risks and solve problems quickly in the field.
- Oversee and participate in planning and collection of high‑quality data on:
- School attendance and child educational outcomes
- Cash transfer delivery and usage
- Livelihood activities and new employment among mothers
- Household and child wellbeing indicators
- Support baseline measurements, monitoring, and data preparation for analysis and publication.
- Work with HQ and research partners to strengthen Mother Strong’s evidence base and credibility.
- Recruit, train, and manage field staff as the program evolves.
- Set clear roles, workflows, and reporting structures.
- Build a strong execution culture with accountability, learning, and respect for the communities served.
- Lead regular team meetings and performance check‑ins.
- Build and maintain active relationships with:
- Sudanese NGOs and community‑based organizations
- International NGOs and humanitarian actors
- Schools, settlement leadership, and local authorities
- Potential donors, research partners, and implementing partners
- Represent Mother Strong professionally in coordination meetings and partnership discussions.
- Identify opportunities for collaboration, funding, and program improvement.
- Participate in virtual meetings weekly with Los Angeles HQ.
- Provide concise written updates on progress, challenges, and priorities.
- Coordinate closely with the Uganda Country Director during the initial transition period.
- Bachelor’s degree in public health, international development, social sciences, education, or related field (Master’s preferred).
- 8+ years of experience in program management, field operations, and/or humanitarian/development work.
- Experience leading teams and conducting research in challenging field environments.
- Strong written and spoken English.
- Comfortable working independently with remote management and support.
