EF Academy is a private international boarding school in Pasadena, CA. We seek a part‑time compassionate and empathetic Registered Nurse (RN) to join our Nursing Team in the Health Center which serves a high school population of 220+ adolescents. The person in this role will work collaboratively with the student services and residential life teams to ensure students are well cared for physically, emotionally and psychologically.

The Health Center Team is responsible for delivering exceptional healthcare services during scheduled daytime and overnight hours, and works in conjunction with the mental health team, athletics department, local urgent care offices and emergency rooms to manage all medical needs. Together, we create a community where students feel safe and supported, safeguarding trust with a real family feel that makes our school a home away from home.

Reports To: Head of School

Salary Range: Hourly rate: $32.00‑36.00/hour

Location: The position has the option to include staff housing.

Responsibilities
  • Provide direct care to students for illness, injury, and chronic condition management
  • Support students with physical and emotional wellbeing
  • Administer prescribed medications and treatments in accordance with school policy and physician’s orders
  • Administer medications and oversee the medication administration training of the Residential Life Team
  • Follow procedures for safe and secure storage of all controlled medication and students’ prescribed personal medications
  • Use the appropriate confidential student information system to keep up‑to‑date, accurate notes and records on students who are receiving support or treatment
  • Monitor and respond to communicable disease outbreaks; liaise with local health authorities as necessary
  • Perform clinical assessments of students
  • Generate individualized treatment plans for students in accordance with best evidence‑based practice with reference to academic and familial expectations
  • Support residential staff with student wellness checks and overnight care plans when needed
  • Crisis intervention, which may involve being prepared to be flexible and available to support in crisis situations
  • Educate students and staff on health promotion and disease prevention
  • Collaborate with school counselors, administrators, and parents regarding student health needs
  • Duties during an overnight shift include case management for students who have been previously admitted to the Health Center during the day, as well as assessment and care for new patients who present during overnight hours
  • Assist with annual physicals, immunization compliance, and other mandated screenings
  • Contribute to school policies and protocols regarding student safety, wellbeing and crisis management
  • Work with local support services and community resources, such as police, hospitals, therapists, nutritionists, mental health professionals and any other relevant community resources
  • Communicate with families, when appropriate, to discuss medical needs of students
  • Play a key role in creating a school‑wide culture that places the safety and well‑being of its students at the forefront
  • Adhere to national and local healthcare laws
  • Lead and support faculty and staff training sessions throughout the academic year
Qualifications
  • Active California State nursing license (RN) required
  • BLS for Healthcare Providers certification
  • Minimum of 2 years of nursing experience, preferably in a school, pediatric, or adolescent setting
  • Experience working in a multicultural environment is a plus
  • Patient‑oriented with exceptional interpersonal and organizational skills
  • Solid assessment, clinical documentation skills, strong attention to detail and collaborative skills
  • Ability and desire to work during hours when students are not in class, including early mornings, evenings and weekends
  • Flexible availability for occasional holiday health needs or emergencies
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment
  • Optional ACLS/PALS certification
  • Knowledge of CA State mandatory vaccine schedule
  • Familiar with CA State conjugate setting Dept. of Health Regulations
  • Any other trainings required by the State of CA applicable to school nursing
