DescriptionThe NASA Postdoctoral Program (NPP) provides unique research opportunities for highly‑talented scientists to conduct ongoing NASA research projects in a NASA Center, Headquarters, or affiliated institute. These one‑to‑three‑year fellowships advance NASA’s missions in space science, Earth science, aeronautics, space operations, exploration systems, and astrobiology. The current invitation focuses on the interpretation and modeling of geological fluid‑mechanical processes on other worlds, especially cryo‑volcanic and hydrologic systems.
Research will employ remote sensing, terrestrial analog studies, geological interpretation, laboratory measurements, and physical modeling. Candidates may pursue individual ideas that overlap with Dr. Karl Mitchell’s interests in coupled evolution of geologic fluid pathways, volcanic vents, hydrological channels, caves, and future mission science requirements for icy worlds. Examples of acceptable studies include the mechanisms behind Enceladus’ jets and plumes, the nature of karst‑like processes on Titan, the viability of cryovolcanism on the moons of Uranus, and the creation of plumes and enigmatic landforms on Triton.
