Position: Applied Scientist, Device Team, AWS Center for Quantum Computing

Overview

The Amazon Web Services Center for Quantum Computing (CQC) in Pasadena, CA, is hiring an Applied Scientist. You will join a multidisciplinary team of experimental and theoretical physicists, materials scientists, and hardware and software engineers working at the forefront of quantum computing. The role focuses on building and optimizing the basic building blocks of quantum processors, from superconducting films and resonators to junctions and qubits, and developing novel metrology techniques to extract deeper insights.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design, fabricate, and test superconducting devices as part of the Physical Metrology and Exploration (PME) subgroup.
  • Develop and refine measurement protocols and metrology tools to evaluate device performance and identify limitations.
  • Integrate expertise in cryogenics, signal‑chain design, and control‑stack software into comprehensive experiments.
  • Collaborate with cross‑functional teams to translate physical insights into improved quantum processor capabilities.
  • Document and disseminate findings, providing recommendations that enhance next‑generation quantum processors.
Basic Qualifications
  • PhD or Master’s degree with 4+ years of experience in science, technology, engineering, or a related field.
  • Track record of original scientific contributions, including patents or publications in top‑tier peer‑reviewed conferences or journals.
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as Java, C++, Python, or similar.
  • Broad experience in experimental physics with an aptitude for learning new topics quickly.
  • Strong analytical, problem‑solving, and communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Deep knowledge and experience in low‑temperature condensed matter physics, including superconductivity, Josephson junctions, phononics, or TLS physics.
