Position Overview
Senior biologist–biochemist responsible for assay development, protein binding assays, and mammalian protein expression and characterization of oral macrocycles and related peptides. The role leads biology efforts for Lilly’s Protomer team, oversees multiple projects, and supports chemists with detailed biology knowledge and assay support.
Responsibilities- Lead biochemistry and assay development for macrocyclic discovery, providing strategy and insight for assays across the group.
- Operate molecule testing efforts from lead identification to lead optimization, contributing through phase1 and beyond.
- Provide assay development expertise and support for macrocyclic peptide discovery projects.
- Offer biological insight based on detailed target biology to focus molecule discovery efforts.
- Develop methodologies and protocols; run SPR and other protein‑binding assays for compound characterization.
- Characterize complete functionality of protein reagents, ensuring quality and traceability.
- Lead a small team of biochemists and biologists to support a large molecule discovery group.
- Enhance Protomer’s platform technology efforts to accelerate assay and biochemical workflows, including automation.
- Collaborate with the group to achieve common goals while offering independent scientific perspective.
- Prioritize high‑conviction targets and accelerate assay efforts across Lilly and the wider research organization.
- Promote a proactive safety culture and maintain safety as a top priority.
- Act as a team player, working effectively, responsibly and professionally with colleagues at Protomer and across Lilly.
- PhD or post‑doctoral degree in biochemistry, molecular biology, chemistry, or a related field with a proven track record of research success.
- Significant experience in assay development, protein binding techniques, and mammalian protein expression.
- Demonstrated leadership as a biologist on therapeutics with multiple modalities, including macrocycles.
- Knowledge of oral macrocyclic peptide developments and peptide/protein properties, solubility, and permeability assays.
- Expertise in protein expression, purification, functional characterization, and protein biochemistry methods.
- Proficiency in molecular biology techniques, experimental design, assay execution, troubleshooting, data analysis, and interpretation.
- Knowledge of laboratory automation systems to streamline experimental protocols and create workflows.
- Basic understanding of computational and AI/machine‑learning methods used for developing oral macrocyclic peptides.
- Understanding of the drug discovery process, from lead generation to optimization, and ability to collaborate with cross‑functional groups.
- Strong communication skills, openness, and the ability to engage with employees, team members and senior leadership.
- Excellent team‑player, strong attention to detail, problem‑solving skills, and learning agility.
- Ability to lead within a globally matrixed organization and across functions.
- Strategic thinking and initiative for continuous improvement within Protomer.
- On‑site presence in Pasadena, CA five days a week, with anticipated domestic and international travel.
Some domestic and international travel is anticipated and expected.

Compensation and BenefitsThe anticipated wage for this position is $163,500–$281,600 per year. Full‑time employees are also eligible for a company bonus based on company and individual performance.
