Part Time Shop Instructor II - second shift

Art Center College of Design is searching for an experienced Part Time Shop Instructor II – second shift – 9‑month schedule to join our team.

The salary range for this position: $29.00 – 30.00 per hour. Hourly positions are based on a 35 hour work week. Final salary is based on education, experience, skills relevant to the role, and internal equity.

Reporting to the supervisor, the Shop Instructor serves as an extension of the classroom education and guides students through fabrication, craftsmanship, and problem solving. The position also teaches and assists in operations outside of design, and provides coaching and mentoring to other instructors.

This part‑time position is based at the south campus and follows a 9‑month academic‑year schedule from September through May. The regular schedule is three days per week, Monday through Saturday, primarily on the second shift, 2:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., with occasional daytime shifts on Saturdays. Flexibility is required for staggered, remote, or alternative schedules.

Shop Operations — 20%

• Comply with policies, safety, performance standards, operating procedures, and training reporting
• Expert handling of wood and metalworking machines
• Process faculty material requests and cut/stocks materials as needed
• Operate staff‑only equipment (Planner, Jointer, Panel Saw, Large Band Saw, Wide Belt Sander) to assist students and process work orders
• Fabricate objects that support new Model Shop tools and machines
• Maintain and perform light maintenance on shop machines and equipment
• Check Model Shop satellite rooms and equipment routinely

Shop Education — 40%

• Provide advanced guidance on projects, design, materials, techniques, equipment, and procedures
• Mentor students on one‑on‑one basis, discussing safety and project execution
• Cultivate student skillsets from beginner to advanced levels of fabrication
• Deliver shop demos and workshops each term in an isolated class environment focused on proper tool operations and safety expectations
• Coach, train, and mentor the Shop Instructor I positions with supervisor support

Shop Safety — 35%

• Ensure compliance to safety, PPE, and dress codes
• Attend required PPE and EHS training sessions
• Maintain a safe work environment throughout the department
• Monitor and maintain shop tools in accordance with safety and maintenance standards
• Maintain situational awareness of shop activity in all spaces and rooms
• Ensure all students, staff, and faculty follow safety standards
• Optional First Responder training for injuries, blood and bodily fluid clean‑up, and emergency responder management for wage increase qualification
• Attend safety meetings and training sessions to stay updated on safety practices and emergency response procedures
• Report accidents or safety concerns to the supervisor and participate in incident documentation
• Contribute to monitoring the safety and cleanliness of the shop and report hazards

Non‑Essential — 5%

• Assist with unloading and stocking of stock and raw materials in the Model Shop and from the loading dock
• Other related duties as assigned

• Technical school training and a minimum of 3–5 years of experience using model shop tools in woodworking, metalworking, fabrication, or equivalent combination of training and experience
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills necessary for customer service and working with students and peers
• Proficient in speaking and performing tool operations in front of large groups
• Broad knowledge of woodworking, metalsmithing, CNC milling, rapid prototyping, plastics, and mold making
• Proficient experience with materials such as wood, foam, glues, metals, and plastics
• Provide extensive safety demonstrations of shop machines, equipment, tools, and processes
• Knowledge of Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) compliance requirements, hazardous chemicals, and waste management
• Knowledge of safety procedures for use and maintenance of equipment, tools, and components
• Self‑starter, able to complete assigned tasks in a timely manner, multitask, and work with minimal supervision
