Pay & Schedule
Pay Rate: $18.00-$23.40 per hour
Schedule:
8 hours per day, 5 days per week (Monday to Friday). Overtime and weekend work may be required.
The position is responsible for operating electric, diesel-electric, or gas-turbine-electric locomotives; interpreting train orders, signals, and rules; transporting freight; and ensuring timely and correct switching and placement of rail cars.
Responsibilities- Inspect locomotive before operating to verify fuel, sand, water, and other supplies.
- Receive starting signal from foreman or helper and move controls to operate locomotive.
- Interpret train orders, signals, and rules to operate locomotive following safety regulations.
- Assist crew leader in training new employees.
- Observe track to detect obstructions and prepare reports on accidents, unscheduled stops, or delays.
- Lubricate moving parts of locomotive and handle hand or ground throw switches, derails, gates, etc.
- Control movement of equipment by radio, hands, and lantern; apply and release hand brakes to secure or move equipment.
- Handle air hoses, wheel chocks, coupling and uncoupling of rail cars.
- Wear required personal protective equipment.
- Other duties as assigned.
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- Military experience helpful.
- Extremely dependable, punctual, and reliable transportation to work daily.
- Good communication skills; comfortable engaging in verbal, non‑verbal, and written communication.
- Strong active listening skills; ability to assess multiple tasks and develop a plan to complete them timely.
- Team-oriented; able to work well with others as part of a team.
Frequent standing and walking; occasional sitting; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; talk or hear; lift and/or move heavy weights. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. Environmental conditions involve moderate to heavy physical effort, use of hand tools, power tools, and equipment.
