Position: Chief Roving Custodian (6:00am-2:30pm)

Chief Roving Custodian

Operations-based position providing coverage during absenteeism of school staff and/or support during emergency situations. The role maintains proper sanitary and operating standards for each school facility or satellite office. Work is repetitive, performed according to schedules and instructions, and considered essential personnel for emergency situations, including inclement weather. Management reserves the right to limit the use of annual leave during mission‑essential time frames.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities

• Operate heating, air conditioning, and ventilation equipment safely and efficiently, ensuring a comfortable interior climate within established guidelines.
• Inspect facilities and grounds daily to maintain safety, sanitary, and security standards.
• Open, close, and lock buildings and gates, or assign tasks to responsible subordinates.
• Participate in general cleaning of building, including high dusting, cleaning light fixtures and air vents, and replacing lamps, fluorescent tubes, and ceiling tiles.
• Make minor maintenance repairs and/or adjustments, such as cleaning clogged plumbing fixtures and replacing electric bulbs, fuses, and ballasts.
• Perform preventive maintenance on all equipment as assigned.
• Oversee and participate in the snow removal program.
• Maintain records of area inspections, inventory, and equipment maintenance.
• Assist in developing custodian work schedules and floor plans as required.
• Perform other related duties as assigned within the same classification or lower.

Education

• High School Diploma or Equivalency Certificate required.
• Technical or Vocational School beyond high school in a skilled industrial or construction trade preferred.

Experience

• Three (3) years of professional cleaning, building equipment service, or operator experience required.
• Supervisory and/or heating and cooling equipment experience preferred.
• Or an equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities deemed sufficient to prepare the employee for the duties of this position.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other Characteristics

• Ability to train on Right to Know Law, asbestos awareness, blood‑borne pathogens, general cleaning, equipment, and chemicals.
• Ability to operate and maintain custodial and grounds equipment.
• Ability to safely use and operate genie lift; training provided if necessary.
• Demonstrated ability to effectively work and communicate with diverse populations.
• Ability to employ business technology tools (e.g., e‑mail, AACPS Intranet, electronic benefits enrollment tool, Microsoft Office Suite).
• Provides basic hand tools.

Language Requirements

• Bilingual in English and Spanish native or near‑native preferred.

Licenses and Certifications

• 4th Grade Stationary Engineer License issued by Maryland Board of Stationary Engineers required.
• Successful completion of Leadership Training or Certificate Course issued by AACPS or equivalent outside course required; or first available after appointment.
• Successful completion of Introduction to School Facilities Boiler Plant Safety & Procedures Certificate issued by AACPS or equivalent outside course.
• Consideration given to candidates who can achieve a passing grade on the aforementioned certificate.
• Hold or be eligible for Driver’s License (DL) Class C Non‑Commercial issued by Maryland or State of Legal Residence required.
• Proof of a good driving record required.
• Daily access to reliable transportation.

Driving Requirements

• Driving is required to conduct bona fide Board business within the scope of employment in this position.
• Personal vehicle required.
