Position: Lead Groundsperson (Five Positions - 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.)

JOB SUMMARY

Performs manual and semi-skilled work and serves as a working leader for grounds employees engaged in the repair and general maintenance of grounds, athletic grounds, and equipment at school facilities to ensure a safe environment for students and staff.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Prepares athletic grounds for use, performs maintenance and repairs on artificial turf, maintains irrigation systems, aerate, seed, fertilizer, and lime.
  • Assists in scheduling and assigning work, determines priorities, reviews work, and inspects finished work.
  • Performs playground equipment safety inspections by identifying hazards, repairing, and modifying equipment to meet American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) standards and Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) guidelines, and maintaining inventory and equipment repair records.
  • Applies herbicides and ensures herbicide application is in accordance with applicable laws.
  • Maintains, issues, orders, and audits supplies and tools.
  • Erects, repairs, and maintains chain link and wood fences. Clears areas and swales by felling trees and removing debris and removing poisonous plants.
  • Performs repair to driveways, parking lots, storm drains, and walkways including asphalt, brick, and concrete.
  • Participates in snow removal.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned within the same classification or lower.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education
  • High School Diploma or Equivalency Certificate required.
Experience
  • Five (5) years progressive experience in construction, landscape, or grounds maintenance required; or
  • Five (5) years athletic grounds experience with knowledge of American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) standards and Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) guidelines preferred;
  • Or an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities deemed sufficient to prepare the employee to successfully perform the duties of the position.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other Characteristics
  • Knowledge of grounds maintenance methods and procedures and of associated hand tools and equipment such as mowers, tractors, and heavy equipment.
  • Ability to learn the content of and skill in reading, interpreting, and applying work orders, diagrams, sketches, blueprints, drawings and specifications, and manufacturers manuals.
  • Ability to oversee the work of others as a leader and make independent judgments and decisions within established parameters.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively work and communicate with diverse populations.
  • Ability to employ business technology tools (e.g. E-mail, AACPS Intranet, electronic benefits enrollment tool, Microsoft Office Suite, etc.).
  • Provides basic hand tools.
Licenses and Certifications

Employee must retain active licenses, certifications, and enrollment as a condition of employment.

  • Successful completion of Artificial Turf (inspection, maintenance and repair) Competency test issued by AACPS preferred; and
  • Successful completion of Mobile Elevating Work Platforms Training‑specific classifications for Grounds are Type 1, Group B (crawler), Type 3, Group B (boom), and A92.2 (vehicle mounted) issued by AACPS preferred; and
  • Successful completion of Playground Safety Competency test issued by AACPS preferred.
  • Upon hire, Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class A (Maryland) issued by Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration (MDOT MVA) required; or
  • Upon hire, Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class A issued by Maryland or State of Residence Department of Transportation (Use the "Apply for this Job" box below). and
