Position: Mechanic II: HVAC (6:00am-2:30pm)

Job Summary

Perform HVAC service (repair, replacement, maintenance) to ensure a healthy learning environment for students and staff.

Responsibilities
  • Inspect and service central HVAC systems to determine operating efficiency.
  • Adjust, repair or overhaul parts such as compressors, pumps, coils, motors, filters, controls, blowers, solenoids and thermostats, humidistats, and registers.
  • Install, adjust, and operate central heating, boilers, and air‑conditioning equipment, checking gauges and instruments to maintain proper operating conditions.
  • Assist less skilled tradesmen with servicing, adjustment, replacement, repair, and maintenance of heating, ventilating, air‑conditioning units.
  • Advise management of issues requiring a contractor and problems with equipment under warranty or maintenance service contracts.
  • Read blueprints, schematic drawings or sketches to determine location, size, capacity, and type of components or units.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned within the same classification or lower.
Minimum Qualifications

Education:

High School Diploma or Equivalency Certificate required. Technical or Vocational School beyond High School in related trade preferred.

Experience:

Three (3) years progressively responsible heating, ventilating, and air‑conditioning work experience required, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Skills and Knowledge
  • Knowledge of rooftop units, heat pumps, and electrical control systems.
  • Basic knowledge of refrigeration, HVAC, steam and condensate systems, pressure and temperature checks, and electrical troubleshooting and servicing.
  • Working knowledge of plumbing and electrical trades as it pertains to HVAC systems.
  • General knowledge of OSHA regulations and safe practices.
  • Working knowledge of boiler service and safe practices.
  • Ability to read and interpret drawings and specifications.
  • Ability to diagnose equipment breakdowns, test parts with instruments, disassemble and reassemble parts, and repair equipment.
  • Ability to work independently and coordinate work with others on a job site.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively work and communicate with diverse populations.
  • Strong customer service orientation.
  • Ability to meet deadlines.
  • Proficiency with business technology tools (e.g., E‑mail, AACPS Intranet, electronic benefits enrollment tool, Microsoft Office Suite).
  • Must provide own basic hand tools and some test equipment.
  • Satisfactory score on required tests.
Licenses and Certifications
  • HVACR Apprentice License issued by Maryland Board of Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Contractors.
  • Universal Chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) Certification issued by US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
  • Driver's License (DL) Class C Non‑Commercial issued by Maryland or State of Legal Residence.
  • Proof of a good driving record.
  • Daily access to reliable transportation.
Driving Requirements
  • Driving to conduct board business within scope of employment.
  • Use of board vehicle.
