JOB SUMMARY
Performs skilled work of the journeyman in the repair and maintenance of a variety of school vehicles and equipment. An incumbent of this class works under the supervision of the Automotive Foreman using independent judgment as to the method of repair after receiving oral instruction or written work order as to the nature of the job.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Completes repair maintenance work on school system vehicles and equipment.
  • Conducts vehicle safety and preventative maintenance inspections.
  • Utilizes computerized diagnostic equipment in determining service requirements.
  • Repairs and/or replaces necessary units and related parts including brakes, cooling systems, fuel systems, and exhaust systems.
  • Repair and overhaul front and rear axle assemblies.
  • Repairs most types of tires.
  • Fuels buses as necessary.
  • Responds to service and accident calls on disabled and damaged school system buses.
  • Responds to any emergency situations as they arise.
  • Practices safe work habits involving self and others.
  • Maintains a clean, organized, and productive work area.
  • Maintains inventory and work orders using a computer system.
  • Provides own basic tools of the trade.
  • May be required to furnish own transportation, as necessary.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned within the same classification or lower.

Education

  • High School Diploma or Equivalency Certificate required.

Experience

  • Completion of a recognized apprenticeship in the trade with experience as a journeyman and required;
  • possession of an appropriate and valid Maryland Motor Vehicle operator’s license (Commercial Driver’s license with airbrakes and passenger endorsement, school bus endorsement with 5 or fewer current points, with no more than three (2) points resulting from traffic violations occurring while operating a Board of Education vehicle. required.
  • Or an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities deemed sufficient to prepare the applicant to successfully perform the duties of the position.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other Characteristics

  • Thorough knowledge of the repair, preventative maintenance practices, and tools of the skilled automotive trade.
  • Thorough knowledge of the principles, repair, and operation of gasoline and diesel engines.
  • Thorough knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
  • Ability to give, understand, and carry out complex oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to make mathematical computations and tabulations.
  • Ability to plan, layout, and work out of doors, coping with varying climate conditions.
  • Possess a high level of mechanical aptitude.
  • New employees are required to pay for and pass AACPS background check.
  • Requires the ability to work shift work, scheduled overtime, respond to emergencies to repairs outside of normal working hours and holidays, as necessary.

Licenses and Certifications
Employee must retain active licenses, certifications, and enrollment as a condition of employment.

  • Hold or be eligible for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certification issued by National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence preferred;
