We are working with a very tenured client to assist them with hiring an experienced Accounting & Audit Manager to oversee their accounting operations and serve as the primary liaison with their external auditors.

This highly visible leadership role is responsible for ensuring financial accuracy, regulatory compliance, successful audit completion, and timely financial reporting.

Reporting directly to the Finance Director
, this position leads the organization's accounting, payroll, financial reporting, and audit functions while supervising and developing a small accounting team.

The successful candidate will possess strong technical accounting expertise, exceptional leadership skills, and the ability to collaborate effectively across multiple departments and with external auditors.

Key Responsibilities
  • Oversee all day-to-day accounting operations, including:
  • Accounts Payable
  • Accounts Receivable
  • Payroll
  • Cash Management
  • Banking and Account Reconciliations
  • Lead the monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close processes.
  • Review and approve journal entries, balance sheet reconciliations, and accruals.
  • Prepare timely and accurate financial statements and management reports.
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP, GASB, and governmental accounting standards.
Audit Management

Serve as the organization's primary contact for external auditors by:

  • Coordinating all internal and external audit activities.
  • Managing audit requests and ensuring timely responses.
  • Preparing audit schedules and supporting documentation.
  • Working with internal departments to ensure financial records are complete and audit-ready.
  • Assisting in the preparation of the Annual Comprehensive Financial Report (ACFR).
  • Monitoring compliance with audit findings and regulatory reporting requirements.
  • Identifying and resolving accounting or compliance issues before the audit process begins.
  • Coordinate preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports for executive leadership and the Board of Directors.
  • Assist with annual budget preparation and long-range financial planning.
  • Support bond compliance, investment reporting, FEMA grant accounting, and other governmental reporting requirements.
  • Participate in ERP implementation, upgrades, and continuous process improvements.
  • Maintain and update accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls.
  • Supervise, mentor, and develop a small accounting team.
  • Partner with executive leadership on financial planning and reporting.
  • Present financial information to executive leadership and the Board of Directors.
  • Collaborate with HR, IT, Operations, and other departments on financial initiatives and compliance matters.
Qualifications Required
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting from an accredited college or university.
  • 5-10 years of progressive accounting experience.
  • Previous supervisory or management experience.
  • Strong background in:
  • General Ledger accounting
  • Month-end and year-end close
  • Account reconciliations
  • Payroll oversight
  • Audit coordination
  • Experience with ERP systems (Workday preferred).
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
Preferred
  • Governmental accounting, municipality, public utility, special district, or other public sector accounting experience is strongly preferred.
  • Public accounting experience, particularly serving governmental entities or participating in governmental audits.
  • CPA, CPA-eligible, CIA, GCFO, or similar professional certification.
  • Strong working knowledge of GAAP, GASB, governmental fund accounting, and governmental financial reporting
    .
  • Experience preparing or supporting the Annual Comprehensive Financial Report (ACFR).
  • Experience with bond accounting, grant accounting, FEMA funding, and governmental compliance reporting.
