Construction Inspector , II, or III - Beaumont Area Office

Inspects construction methods and workmanship to ensure contractors build roadways, bridges, traffic signals, airports and related structures in accordance with plans and specifications. Acts as consultant regarding work progress and problem resolution; may serve as the only inspector on a construction project or assist in overseeing construction inspection activities for very large and/or complex projects within a district or conduct statewide construction inspection activities for ongoing airport improvement projects.

Responsible to a licensed professional engineer who has full authority for approval of all work. Work requires contact with contractors. May perform materials tests and manufacturing process inspections at fabrication sites.

Construction Inspector I:

• Calculates payments due contractors for work completed.
• Consults with Project Engineers, resident project representatives and contractors' superintendents on work progress and construction problems; reviews equipment utilization data and time/cost estimates.
• Ensures adequate levels of equipment and materials are assigned to projects; ensures material tests are performed and materials meet required standards.
• Drives to ensure contractors build roadways, bridges and related highway structures and airport improvements in accordance with plans and specifications.
• Monitors project phasing and traffic control plans or airport closure plans and ensures compliance with approved safety standards; inspects barricades as required and moves traffic control devices and barricades.
• Observes and inspects ongoing construction work.
• Performs drafting, design and surveying work.
• Assists in engineering‑related data collection, inspections, assessments, analysis, and review activities for plan development by others.
• Trains and mentors less experienced inspectors on work methods.
• Documents work progress and issues arising throughout scope of project.
• Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

Construction Inspector II‑III: (essential duties above plus)

• Attends pre‑construction meetings and answers questions from contractors and other attendees.
• Assists in planning and coordinating office operations.
• Reviews construction records, inspection reports and records audits to ensure contractors build roadways, bridges and related structures in accordance with plans and specifications.
• Mentors and develops technical employees in test and inspection procedures and material specifications.
• Handles problem calls from producers, suppliers, inspectors and construction project field personnel.
• Observes and inspects ongoing construction work.

High School Graduate or equivalent in general high school studies.

Construction Inspector I:
No experience required.

Construction Inspector II: 1 year of construction, construction inspection, engineering support, maintenance and repairs, materials or process inspection; or transportation engineering support related experience.

Construction Inspector III: 2 years of construction, construction inspection, engineering support, maintenance and repairs, materials or process inspection; or transportation engineering support related experience.

Experience may be satisfied by full‑time or prorated part‑time equivalent.

Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
