The IE Technician provides hands‑on support and maintenance for all plant instrument and electrical systems. This role is responsible for installing, troubleshooting, maintaining, and repairing electrical and instrumentation equipment to ensure safe and reliable plant operations. Systems supported include field instrumentation, MCCs, EPC equipment, electrical process equipment, heat tracing systems, grounding systems, and plant/building power distribution and lighting.
The IE Technician works closely with Operations, Engineering, and Maintenance teams to resolve equipment issues, support plant reliability initiatives, and ensure compliance with all health, safety, environmental, and quality standards, including ISO‑9001, ISO‑45001, and applicable regulatory requirements (OSHA, EPA, TCEQ, etc.).
Must Have’s- Experience with electrical power distribution, motor controls/relays, and breaker controls/protection relays up to 5kV
- Hands‑on work with powered field equipment and electric motors for pumps, blowers, heaters, etc.
- Electric heat tracing experience
- Basic knowledge of field instrumentation is required; experience with analyzers (CEMS, Oâ‚‚, ammonia, TDL technology) is a plus
- Motor protection relay upgrades for 480V and 5kV motor controls
- Breaker protection relay upgrades for power distribution systems
- 5kV transformer replacement/upgrade projects including tie‑breaker improvements
- Power factor correction capacitor bank upgrades
- Plant grounding and bonding system improvements
- CEMS upgrade support
- Electric heat tracing system upgrades
- Various field instrumentation maintenance and reliability improvements
- Install, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair plant electrical and instrumentation systems
- Support systems operating across voltage ranges from 120V through 5kV
- Collaborate with Operations and Engineering teams to identify and resolve electrical/instrumentation issues
- Assist with commissioning, startup, and testing of new or upgraded equipment
- Follow plant standards, industry best practices, and PSM Mechanical Integrity requirements
- Support reliability‑focused initiatives and perform preventive maintenance on electrical and instrumentation equipment
- Assist with scope development, job planning, and technical documentation for maintenance activities
- Coordinate with contractors and internal teams as needed for project execution
- Participate in safety inspections, audits, hazard reviews, and completion of corrective actions
- Associate degree or technical certification in Electrical, Instrumentation, or related field OR equivalent experience (10+ years in lieu of degree)
- Minimum of 5 years hands‑on experience in industrial electrical and instrumentation systems, preferably in chemical or petrochemical manufacturing
- Strong troubleshooting skills for electrical and instrumentation equipment
- Familiarity with plant electrical systems, including power distribution, grounding, lighting, and control systems
- Working knowledge of ISA, NEMA, and NEC standards
- Experience with industrial VFDs, motor protection relays, electric heat tracing, and control platforms such as Allen‑Bradley PLCs and/or Yokogawa CS 3000 is a plus
- Experience supporting reliability and/or mechanical integrity programs preferred
