Position: Construction Inspector I-III Beaumont Area Office

Job Summary

Oversees construction inspections for roadways, bridges, traffic signals, airports, and related structures to ensure compliance with plans and specifications. Acts as consultant on progress and problem resolution, may serve as the only inspector or assist on large/complex projects.

Responsibilities
  • Calculate payments due to contractors for work completed.
  • Consult with Project Engineers, resident project representatives and contractors’ superintendents on work progress and construction problems; review equipment utilization data and time/cost estimates.
  • Ensure adequate levels of equipment and materials are assigned to projects; ensure material tests are performed and materials meet required standards.
  • Drive to ensure contractors build roadways, bridges and related highway structures and airport improvements in accordance with plans and specifications.
  • Monitor project phasing and traffic control plans or airport closure plans; ensure compliance with approved safety standards; inspect barricades as required; move traffic control devices and barricades.
  • Observe and inspect ongoing construction work.
  • Perform drafting, design and surveying work.
  • Assist in engineering-related data collection, inspections, assessments, analysis, and review activities for plan development.
  • Train and mentor less experienced inspectors on work methods.
  • Document work progress and issues throughout the scope of the project.
  • Perform other job responsibilities as assigned.
  • Attend pre-construction meetings and answer questions from contractors and other attendees.
  • Assist in planning and coordinating office operations.
  • Review construction records, inspection reports and records audits to ensure compliance with plans and specifications.
  • Mentor and develop technical employees in test and inspection procedures and material specifications.
  • Handle problem calls from producers, suppliers, inspectors and construction project field personnel.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Education: High School Graduate or Equivalent in general high school studies.
  • Experience:
    • Construction Inspector I:
      No experience required.
    • Construction Inspector II: 1 year of construction, construction inspection, engineering support, maintenance and repairs, materials or process inspection; or transportation engineering support related experience.
    • Construction Inspector III: 2 years of construction, construction inspection, engineering support, maintenance and repairs, materials or process inspection; or transportation engineering support related experience.
    • Experience may be satisfied by full‑time or prorated part‑time equivalent.
  • Licenses and

    Certifications:

    Valid driver’s license; position requires driving a state vehicle.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
  • Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions; noise; atmospheric conditions (fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, poor ventilation).
  • Standing, prolonged periods of time.
  • Walking, moving on foot to accomplish tasks; long distances.
  • Talking – expressing or exchanging ideas by spoken words.
  • Job requires balancing, walking, standing, crouching on various surfaces without falling.
  • Required to wear protective gear (respirator, hard hat, or other device).
  • Medium work: lift up to 50 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs.
  • Close visual acuity – works with data/figures, view computer screens, extensive reading.
Conditions of Employment
  • This position has been identified as physically demanding; a pre‑employment physical is required.
  • Must pass a drug test prior to employment for safety impact positions; subject to random drug testing. The Department of Transportation’s Drug and Alcohol Testing Regulation – 49 CFR Part 40, (e) – does not authorize “medical marijuana” under a state law to be a valid medical explanation for a positive drug test result for an employee in this position.
