The Mohs Medical/Surgical Assistant provides assistance to the licensed medical doctor in clinic and outpatient surgical settings. They deliver safe, knowledgeable, compassionate, individualized care to all patients and perform duties based on the organization’s needs.

• Serve as a patient advocate during exam, surgery, and treatment.
• Interview surgery patients to obtain medical information.
• Measure patients’ vital signs, weight, and height.
• Show patients to examination rooms, procedure rooms, or operative rooms and prepare them for the physician.
• Review a surgical informed consent with the patient before the procedure.
• Record patients’ medical history, medications, allergies, vital signs, and test results in an Electronic Health Record (EHR).
• Set up a sterile surgical tray:
  • Inspect sterile items prior to opening.
  • Open sterile surgical items in a sterile fashion.
  • Lay supplies out on sterile field in an organized manner.
  • Place surgical gloves on hands using sterile technique.
• Assist the physician during surgery while maintaining sterile field:
  • Blot with gauze when needed.
  • Use skin hooks to gently retract skin during surgeon’s actions.
  • Use forceps to hold suture line away from field.
  • Use scissors to clip suture at appropriate lengths.
  • Assist surgeon during cauterization.
  • Know the difference between thermal cautery and electrocautery and which is appropriate.
• Properly numb a patient’s skin using local anesthetics as directed.
• Prepare and administer medications following safety protocol.
• Collect blood, tissue, or other laboratory specimens, log them, and prepare for testing.
• Explain surgical/treatment procedures, medications, and diet to patients.
• Teach wound care instructions and provide comfort regarding expected healing times.
• Help physicians examine and treat patients, handing instruments and performing injections or sutures removal.
• Accept triage style phone calls from patients and determine if they require in-person consultation.
• Authorize drug refills and enter prescriptions into the EHR.
• Clean surgical instruments, wrap in sterile packs, and place in autoclave.
• Prepare treatment rooms for patient examinations, keeping them organized and clean.
• Assess patient condition throughout the exam, procedure, or surgery and notify physician or RN if indicated.
• Clean rooms and medical equipment between patients and at end of day.
• Dispose of infection waste and biohazard materials correctly.
• Schedule appointments for patients, including surgery and clinic visits.
• Maintain knowledge of dermatologic surgery, Mohs procedure, blood thinners, pacemakers, defibrillators, skin cancers, and head & neck anatomy.
• Coordinate care with medical facilities or departments for tests, admission, or collaborative surgical care.
• Change dressings on wounds and apply appropriate bandages post Mohs or excision.
• Place steri-strips and use mastisol; use Hibiclens and other surgical preps correctly.
• Inventory and assess need for instruments, supplies, and equipment, keeping rooms stocked.
• Order monthly medical supplies and ensure equipment functionality.
• Accurately document all procedures in a timely manner using the EHR system (Modernizing Medicine – EMA).
• Maintain functional computer skills and respond to emergency situations according to nursing standards and protocols.
• Operate oxygen delivery devices and recognize patient vasovagal reactions.
• Assist physicians in medical emergencies and document per protocol.
• Adhere to all policies and procedures in performing duties.
• Uphold a culture of high-quality care, support, and excellent patient experience.
• Perform other duties necessary or in the best interest of the organization.
• This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

• Experience:
  
  At least 1 year in a medical setting and at least 6 months in a dermatological surgery setting.
• Knowledge:
  Medical terminology, sterile technique, anatomy, medication, state/federal regulations, HIPAA guidelines.
• Skills:
  
  Prior EMA experience (preferred), ability to follow verbal and written instructions, strong written communication in English, interpersonal skills, detailed orientation, professional attitude, reliability.
• Organizational:
  Management skills to support leadership of this function, ability to maintain stock and inventory, ability to order supplies.
• Computer:
  Basic to intermediate operation of EHR programs, Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook.
• Mathematical/analytical:
  Basic to intermediate problem solving.
• Additional:
  Knowledge of female physicals, emergency protocol familiarity, ability to use oxygen delivery equipment.
