Laboratory Instrumentation and Calibration Specialist

The Laboratory Instrumentation and Calibration Specialist is responsible for overseeing all laboratory testing equipment. The calibration specialist acts as the technical contact for the Laboratory Manager/Supervisor regarding testing equipment, ensuring compliance with industry standards and standard operating procedures.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Maintain the equipment inventory
  • Request reference materials and standards needed for calibration
  • Calibrate, service, verify, and maintain laboratory instruments including GC, GCMS, ICP, AAS, spectrometers, etc.
  • Prepare reports on calibration and maintenance activities
  • Analyze routine and quality control samples as needed
  • Train technicians on equipment calibration, use, and maintenance
  • Coordinate with the Laboratory Manager/Supervisor on new projects
  • Maintain a clean and organized laboratory environment
  • Complete safety training and certifications
  • Prepare chemical solutions following standards or work instructions
  • Attend periodic safety meetings
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Required Skills

  • High School diploma or equivalent; some college credits preferred
  • At least 1 year of experience in petroleum testing and/or equipment maintenance
  • Basic computer and math skills
  • Ability to learn and implement new procedures quickly
  • Effective communication skills with staff, consultants, and management
  • Understanding of safety standards and training in the industry

Working Conditions

Primarily in a laboratory setting with some office work. Exposure to fumes, airborne particles, and chemicals. Use of protective equipment and adherence to safety protocols are required.

Physical Requirements

This is a safety-sensitive position requiring drug testing, physical fitness, and the ability to lift up to 45 lbs. Must work in environments with odors typical of petroleum products and comply with OSHA exposure limits.
