Registered Nurse (RN) General Purpose

The primary responsibility of the registered nurse in this position is to supervise the day‑to‑day nursing activities of the facility during the assigned tour of duty, ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local standards, guidelines and regulations, and maintaining the highest quality of care at all times.

Essential Duties

Those listed below are essential functions of the position. The list is not exhaustive; the RN may be required to perform additional tasks that are related to or essential to the role.

Administrative Functions
  • Assist the Director of Nursing Services in directing day‑to‑day nursing activities.
  • Participate in developing, maintaining, and updating written policies and procedures that govern nursing service functions.
  • Ensure reference materials at nurses’ stations are current.
  • Recommend written materials to support nursing service needs.
  • Maintain the Nursing Service Procedures Manual in alignment with daily nursing procedures.
  • Enforce compliance with the procedures in the Manual by all nursing personnel.
  • Prepare written and oral reports/recommendations to the Director regarding departmental operations.
  • Review policies, procedure manuals, and job descriptions periodically, proposing revisions to the Director.
  • Coordinate nursing services with other resident services to ensure continuity of care.
  • Ensure personnel compliance with their respective job descriptions.
  • Develop, maintain, and implement the facility’s quality assurance program for the nursing service department.
  • Participate in facility surveys and inspections conducted by authorized government agencies.
  • Review and update resident discharge plans as required.
  • Assist the Director in planning nursing services for resident discharge.
  • Meet with nursing staff and support personnel to plan departmental services, programs, and activities.
  • Admit, transfer, and discharge residents as needed.
  • Complete accident and incident reports.
  • Interpret department policies and procedures for personnel, residents, visitors, and government agencies.
  • Perform administrative duties such as completing medical forms, reports, evaluations, and charting.
  • Maintain confidentiality of user  and passwords, reporting violations to the Administrator.
  • Report unauthorized attempts to access the facility’s information system.
Committee Functions
  • Attend committee meetings (Infection Control, Policy Advisory, Pharmaceutical, Quality Assessment, etc.) as required.
  • Assist in preparing written and oral reports of nursing programs for these committees.
  • Provide information to the Quality Assurance and Assessment Committee upon request.
  • Help develop agendas for the Care Plan Committee meetings.
  • Participate in reviews of discharge plans and provide them to the Care Plan Committee as needed.
  • Implement committee recommendations in accordance with the Director’s direction.
Personnel Functions
  • Ensure sufficient licensed practical and registered nurses are available during the tour of duty.
  • Ensure a sufficient number of certified nursing assistants are available to provide routine nursing care.
  • Develop work assignments and assist in carrying them out.
  • Delegate administrative authority and accountability to each Charge Nurse.
  • Ensure nursing assistants are enrolled in or have graduated from an approved training program.
  • Ensure nurse aide trainees are supervised by a licensed nurse.
  • Conduct daily rounds to verify assignments are performed to nursing standards.
  • Report findings to the Director.
  • Monitor absenteeism to maintain adequate staffing.
  • Report problem areas to the Director.
  • Enforce dress code and other departmental policies.
  • Review complaints and grievances filed by personnel.
  • Make reports to the Director as required.
  • Build rapport with inter‑department personnel and other departments.
  • Maintain a calm, positive environment throughout the unit and shift.
  • Meet shift regularly to address problem areas and improve services.
  • Evaluate the department workforce and recommend improvements.
  • Participate in employee performance evaluations and staffing decisions.
  • Ensure disciplinary actions are fair and non‑discriminatory.
