The Equipment Operator is responsible for operating heavy equipment and supporting trenchless pipe bursting operations for underground utility rehabilitation projects. This position operates excavators, backhoes, winches, and air compressors while assisting the crew with pipe installation, excavation, and equipment setup.
The operator works closely with the Pipe Bursting Supervisor and crew to ensure work is completed safely, efficiently, and according to project specifications.
Key ResponsibilitiesOperate and maintain construction equipment including:
- Excavators
- Backhoes
- Air compressors
- Vacuum trucks (when required)
- Small support equipment and trench tools
Responsibilities include:
- Digging launch pits and receiving pits
- Excavating for service reconnections
- Setting and positioning pipe bursting equipment
- Loading and unloading pipe and materials
- Assisting with trench backfill and restoration
- Assist with setup and operation of pipe bursting equipment
. - Help align bursting rods and pulling systems.
- Support the installation of replacement pipe.
- Assist with staging pipe and materials along the jobsite.
- Inspect equipment daily for safety and mechanical issues.
- Perform basic maintenance including fueling, greasing, and cleaning.
- Report equipment problems to supervisors immediately.
- Ensure equipment is operated safely and efficiently.
- Follow all company safety policies and OSHA regulations
. - Maintain safe work zones around excavations and equipment.
- Assist with trench safety and jobsite housekeeping.
- Work safely around underground utilities and traffic.
- Assist crew members with general construction duties when equipment operation is not required.
- Help stage tools, pipe, and materials.
- Maintain a clean and organized work area.
- Ability to operate excavators and backhoes safely and efficiently
- Experience working around underground utilities
- Knowledge of construction equipment operation
- Ability to follow instructions and work as part of a crew
- 3+ years heavy equipment operation
- Experience in underground utility construction preferred
- Experience working around trenching or excavation
- Experience supporting pipe bursting or trenchless construction
- CDL license. Restrictions are ok.
- OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs Ability to work around heavy equipment and excavations
