Job Summary Description:
The Pipe Layer is responsible for the installation of sewer, water, and storm utility systems on open cut construction projects. This position performs skilled utility installation work, ensuring pipe, manholes, and structures are installed according to project specifications, grade requirements, and quality standards. The Pipe Layer works closely with equipment operators, deck personnel, and field supervision to ensure projects are completed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with all applicable requirements.
Essential Job Accountabilities:
- Install PVC, ductile iron (DI), corrugated, Schedule 40, and Schedule 80 pipe in accordance with project plans and specifications.
- Install sewer mains, laterals, service connections, water mains, taps, storm drainage systems, and related utility infrastructure.
- Set and install manholes, box-base manholes, cast-in-place manholes, precast structures, and associated utility components.
- Ensure all pipe and structures are installed to proper line and grade requirements.
- Verify that completed installations are free of leaks, sags, and defects and meet project quality standards.
- Assist in preparing for and successfully passing inspections and testing requirements.
- Read grade stakes, markings, and other field layout information to support proper installation.
- Report project issues, concerns, installation conflicts, and safety hazards to the Foreman or Superintendent promptly.
- Work closely with equipment operators, Top Men (Deck Men), and other crew members to coordinate installation activities.
- Assist with site cleanup, material handling, and general project support as needed.
- Support asphalt and concrete restoration activities as required.
- Maintain compliance with company safety policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
- Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Education:
- High School Diploma or GED preferred.
Experience:
- Minimum of five (5) years of experience installing underground utility systems required.
- Experience laying PVC, ductile iron (DI), corrugated, Schedule 40, and Schedule 80 pipe required.
- Experience installing sewer, water, and storm utility systems required.
- Experience installing cast-in-place manholes, precast manholes, box-base manholes, and related structures required.
- Experience reading grades and performing utility installations to specification required.
- Experience setting pipe lasers preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Strong knowledge of underground utility installation methods and construction practices.
- Understanding of sewer main, lateral, water main, service connection, tap, and storm drainage installation.
- Basic knowledge of grades, elevations, and construction layout.
- Ability to install pipe and structures accurately to line and grade.
- Ability to read and interpret project markings, grade stakes, and utility plans.
- Knowledge of proper trench safety practices and safe excavation procedures.
- Basic knowledge of asphalt patching and concrete restoration.
- Ability to effectively communicate and work as part of a construction crew.
- Ability to multitask and adapt to changing project priorities.
- Willingness and ability to travel for extended periods as required by project needs.
- Reliable attendance and punctuality.
- Must successfully pass required pre-employment screenings, including drug testing.
- Ability and willingness to comply with all company policies, procedures, and PURIS's Code of Conduct on a daily basis.
Physical Demands:
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, bend, kneel, crouch, climb, and perform manual labor in outdoor environments. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and work around excavation sites, underground utilities, heavy equipment, and active construction operations.
