Core Job ResponsibilitiesCore Job Responsibilities
- Build and install iron or steel girders, columns, and other structural components used in industrial construction projects.
- Erect structural steel frames for buildings, pipe racks, platforms, and other structures.
- Connect steel columns, beams, and girders using bolts, welds, and other fastening methods.
- Cut, position, and secure reinforcing steel bars used in concrete construction.
- Direct crane operators in the safe movement and placement of structural steel and reinforcing materials.
- Attach cables and rigging to steel components for lifting and placement.
- Hoist steel members into position and guide them into place within the structural framework.
- Position steel members using connecting bars, spud wrenches, and drift pins to align bolt holes.
- Drill holes into steel for bolts and fasteners when required.
- Bolt or weld structural components into their final position.
- Number and organize steel pieces according to assembly and erection instructions.
- Unload, sort, and stack steel materials delivered to the jobsite.
- Use plumb bobs, levels, and laser equipment to verify proper alignment and positioning.
- Install structural components including stairs, handrails, and curtain wall supports.
- Fabricate, weld, and cut structural metal in fabrication shops when required.
- Inspect installed steel components to ensure proper fit and perform repairs as necessary.
- Assist with rigging activities and other tasks required to support steel erection operations.
Essential Skills & Qualifications
- Experience working as an Ironworker in construction or industrial environments preferred.
- Ability to read and interpret structural drawings and erection plans.
- Knowledge of steel erection procedures and connection methods.
- Familiarity with rigging practices and crane signaling.
- Ability to safely operate hand tools and power tools commonly used in iron working.
- Strong understanding of jobsite safety practices and working at heights.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a crew in fast-paced construction environments.
- Strong communication skills and ability to follow instructions.
Physical Requirements
- Frequently lift and carry materials weighing up to 50 pounds
- Climb ladders, scaffolding, and structural steel
- Work at heights while maintaining proper fall protection
- Good verbal and written communication skills to understand instructions, applicable safety regulations, and to maintain records.
- TWIC Card (for most sites)
- Stand, walk, kneel, crouch, and bend for extended periods of time
- Work outdoors in varying weather and industrial environments
- Use hands and arms to reach for, grasp, and manipulate tools and materials
Tool Requirements
- Must provide basic ironworker hand tools including spud wrenches, sleever bars, bull pins, tape measure, and other trade-related tools as required.
Environment:
Working conditions encountered in this job include those found in a typical outdoor manufacturing setting which includes exposure to outside weather conditions, work at elevated heights, climbing of stairs and ladders, and physical manipulation of tools and mechanical equipment. This job demands the use of typical manufacturing personal protective equipment as well as advanced protective equipment as needed.
