Designs components or portions of systems and modifies existing designs to develop or improve products and facilitate manufacturing operations. Utilizes computer‑aided design equipment and graphic tools such as CAD, CAM or CATIA. Gathers information, makes studies, computes calculations, and prepares original rough layouts, sketches to present design proposal. Coordinates design criteria with engineering, manufacturing, tooling, material, and planning groups, ensuring ease of manufacture, availability of materials, and contractual specifications.

Develops basic data and makes preliminary layouts, sketches, and notes necessary to present the design proposal. Investigates relevant design factors such as ease of manufacture, availability of materials and equipment, interchangeability, replaceability, strength‑weight efficiency, contractual specification requirements, and cost. Coordinates with other organizations affected by design development. Makes layouts of complex assemblies and details parts of devices, mechanisms, and structures.

Checks completed layouts and drawings for clarity, completeness, conformity to standards, procedures, specifications, and accuracy of calculations and dimensioning. Identifies design errors, omissions, and other deficiencies, and recommends revisions and/or improvements in design layout to responsible engineers or designers.

• High School Diploma/GED and 10 years of experience
• Associate Degree or other 2‑year technical degree in related discipline and 6 years experience

• Proficiency in utilization of SHIP CONSTRUCTOR and AUTOCAD for supporting design and extraction/development of new drawings or Siemens NX for generating VWI – Virtual Work Instructions.
