Role
Designs major components or major portions of a functional system to develop or improve products and facilitate manufacturing operations. Develops basic data and makes preliminary layouts, sketches, and notes necessary to present design proposals. Investigates pertinent design factors such as ease of manufacture, availability of materials and equipment, interchangeability, replaceability, strength‑weight efficiency, contractual specification requirements and cost. Coordinates with other organizations affected by design development.
Makes layouts of complex assemblies and details parts of devices, mechanisms, and structures. Checks completed layouts and drawings for clarity, completeness, conformity to standards, procedures, specifications, and accuracy of calculations and dimensioning. Identifies design errors, omissions, and other deficiencies, and recommends revisions and/or improvements in design layout to responsible engineers or designers. Position will primarily lead all Detail Design activities related to the Surface Combatant Programs (DDG and FF) and LHA Class, supporting the Ship Design Manager, Planning and Program Office, and communicating with the Navy and Operations.
This effort includes creation of plans, schedules, and estimates for major tasks, driving those tasks to closure, reporting progress, creating unique processes as necessary, and resolving design issues. Develop and administer budgets, schedules, and performance standards, and execute responsibilities as Cost Account Manager for the cognizance cost center within the organization.
- High School diploma and 12 years of progressive technical experience in research, engineering, and design or equivalent.
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited school of engineering and 8 years of progressive technical experience in research, engineering, and design or equivalent.
- Master’s degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited school of engineering and 6 years of progressive technical experience in research, engineering, and design or equivalent.
- Fluent understanding of the Ship Specifications in all areas of Detail Design.
- Superior communication skills and past experience interfacing with Operations, Planning, and the Navy.
- Leadership experience with small to large projects within Detail Design.
- Formal Leadership training preferred.
- Good understanding of EVMS.
- Experience in creating a plan including estimating, budget allocation, process development, and schedule creation.
